I am everywhere...
The first birth control pill designed to stop monthly periods has been approved for use in the US.
The Food and Drug Administration backed continuous use of the pill, Lybrel, which is manufactured by Wyeth.

Taken daily it can halt a woman's menstrual periods indefinitely, as well as prevent pregnancies.

Say goodbye to condom guys! seriously, aint there gonna be anyside effects or something?

About half the women who tested it in trials dropped out before the end, citing irregular and unscheduled bleeding.

The pill contains a low dose of two hormones already widely used in birth control pills, ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel.

And yet it got approved? im sure the ethics for drug approval iirc is based on a higher percentage not just half of the final phase test (clinical trials)

Read the full story here, it appears like the drug was rushed imo and not enough long term effects are known.

Girls can stop their periods anyway by using the normal contraceptive pill. I have to do this due to a medical problem, so I dont see what the big fuss is about, you just keep taking the next packet without a break.

Or for girls not on the pill you can get northisterone from you doctor, and you take that for as long as you want to delay your period, good if you're going on holiday or something.

I'll continue using a john bag until they invent a pill that stops me getting the clap.

I dont even know they can do that but i would think it comes with some clear warning or something.

urmmm STI's?

Not in a problem in a long-term, exclusive relationship (ok, 99% of the time it isn't). Although for the time being I will continue to recommend condoms as the best overall type of contraception.

Yes but if you have a medical condition such as I do where the contraceptive pill helps prevent the condition getting any worse then you kinda take the risk of only having 3 or 4 "breaks" a year.

I guess it is down to individual.
Do you think it was ok to approve this new pills then? Take into consideration the report on the trials.

nope, not medically, its there so that you have 7 days in which you are free to bleed and feel like a normal girl. when the nurse told me i could stop having periods due to having a contraceptive implant (which is progesterone 24/7 for 3 years) i was horrified, but luckily the side effects are different for everyone.

and yeah, way to try stop the spread of aids people.. use condoms!

yup i know people who take the pill for medical reasons. and i am also one of those who are guilty for not having a break due to holidays etc

For that I use one of my Wellington Boots covered in insecticide.

Its also down to my gynaecologist and the fact that taking the pill is a heck of a lot less risky and less painful than having repeated operations .
As for this new pill, as I said its nothing new, women have been able to stop their periods before now, and the side effects dont seem that nice or acceptable to be honest.

Are you saying to me using hormones to stop a process that is natural to the body is totally ok? Im sure the guy who was concerned mentioned something similar in the article.

Please explain the menstrual cycle to me as i might be missing something here. Those seven days are there so as your body can follow it natural process of recycling or getting rid of the unused egg. It aint about feeling like a woman. Altering this cycle is bound to bring potential problem i would think. If not instantly but in the long run.

The condom bit was a joke.

Technically though women on the pill arent having a "normal" period, the pill stops them ovulating, so when they do have a "bleed" its not actually due to the egg not being fertilised and the lining of the womb being broken down. Its called something else, but its name escapes me.
