Personal Reg Plate Question

Hi guys, i wanted to know something,
I know you can buy personalised reg plates, but i was wondering why you cant buy "special" e.g. 007 or MR1 or M3 etc any ones like this (not just letters and numbers that have something to do, but plates with a single letter or number), only buy they at auction?
I mean you can make up a plate, but when were these "special" plates registered? and why cant you make them anymore?

Gives everyone an equal chance for getting it I suppose... plates like that always go for 10's of thousands im sure.

They are just old plates, you cant make plates up :confused:

The reason you wont find many really good plates on the open market at places like newreg is because they are all owned by people who if selling would rather auction them off.
