Personalised Number Plates

Nothing looks more tacky than illegally spaced plates to spell names or words. It just looks daft.

Prefer far neater legally spaced ones, as short as possible. The shorter the better.

Having normal length ones doesn't even look like you've got a private plate. I saw S123 XYZ on a Fiesta the other day - only somebody as geeky as me who realised it was slightly too new to be an S plate would realise it even had a private plate.

Initially ?

Just a VDN - vehicle defect notice. Where you're required to attend an MOT station i believe (or somewhere similar) to proove you've put legal plates on it that are correctly spaced.

You'll have to have two sets anyway, because you wont pass your MOT with them illegally spaced i believe. They are now quite tight on numberplate law at MOT time.

After you've been issued 1 or 2 VDNs however, the police can get the DVLA to simply withdraw the plate. Meaning you've lost that personalized number plate and don't get a single penny back. And have to pay the costs for putting it back on its original plate.

It's also a £30 FPN. Personally I'd never give a defect notice for a clearly misrepresented plate/wrong font.

I got my private plate in August 07 & wasn't happy with the plates my local autoshop made up for me as it had their advertising on the bottom, I wanted them plain. So I did some online & yeah I moved the space. Instead of XX_XXX it goes X_XXXX. This now becomes my first initial & surname, it looked good before but looks even better now.

I've never been pulled for them. I keep the correctly spaced plates in the boot with a small screwdriver just in case but whenever the police are behind me they just end up turning away somewhere else.

I've also suspect that their number plate recognition system doesn't recognise the spaces, as some people have those double decker plates, as do many bikes.

I still need to put on the correctly spaced ones for MOT, forgot last year but the mechanic I use put them on for me, he is as sound as they come.

Just don't go moaning that plod are crap if your car gets stolen and never gets found ;)
