Seeing the lotus esprit thread made me remember something that happened the other day.

Was sitting in a petrol station in portsmouth, waiting for my sister to pay. When this lovely Esprit V8 turned up, burbling away, guy gets out so i think ooh he is going to get some form of food, but no he walks round to the pump whilst the lotus burbles away quietly, well quite loud. The guy then precedes to fill up, fills up 20quid goes in chucks it down and then drives off in quite a rush.

Now obviously you have the signs saying turn off ignition when pumping. But is there any legal things about this as I once thought you had to by law turn off your engine. As although generally safe could be a safety hazard.

Was quite funny as i then pulled out and saw him stuck at the traffic lights by fratton park.

Not sure. He might have jump started it originally though, hence not wanting to cut the power until the battery had charged.

I don't know but when I had to bump start my car for a few weeks due to no starter motor, I used to do this all the time at the filling station, never got any problems.

He didn't say he drove off without paying?

My mate got asked to Jump start some one once.

I quickly went inside for cover :p :o

should have jumped in it and driven away unless it had a turbo timer, does the Lotus have a turbo?

only the older ones afaik. 2.2 turbos :D

You are asked not to use the pump with your engine running. Same as you are asked not to smoke on the forecourt or use your mobile.
Never stops them though, it will only when something goes wrong that they will realise why the signs are there in the first place and probably try suing

Mobile rule is stupid.

had to jump start a car once with no petrol, drove it to the station.

Presumed that filling the car when still on was a really bad idea, so quickly turned it off, chucked a tenner in, and started it again....

Nope, wouldnt start, had to push off forecourt and jumpstart again.

"Fills up 20 quid goes in chucks it down and then drives off"

As to mean that he filled up the car, chucked down the filler nozzle and drove off - nothing about paying

In your opinion yes. However the petrol station is believe it or not interested in safety of the rest of its customers despite however selfish or ignorant others wish to be.
Its there to stop distractions and end up with spills or overfilling of your tank and leaving it for someone else to deal with or slip on in the case of diesel
Just because you don't agree with the rule doesn't mean that you get to ignore it.

fills up, goes in (to the shop), chucks it down (the money) and drives off in a rush.

Might be me that misunderstood? I thought the point he was trying to make was the fact that the guys engine was still running while filling up. Him mentioning paying wasn't really relevant:p

Edit- cleared up by TDS :)

No, it there because if you use your mobile on the forecourt you'll cause a devastating explosion, killing nuns, orphans and kittens for miles around.

Obviously, they've also banned all remote central locking, electric windows and sparkplug coils for the same reason.
