My girlfriend has been looking for a car to replace her aging Pug 306 DTurbo for a while now. Today we bought a replacement, she'd considered a Skoda Fabia Comfort but they all had hideous interiors and also looked at few VW Polos.

It was a private sale 03 plate black 1.4 GLX with 26k on the clock, advertised for £4,695. We had a good look over it, all looked sound apart from some paint damage on the rear quarter from bird crap which would need spraying, a small dent from being shot with a BB gun and a fag burn on the rear seats. I said initially we'd offer £4k and there and then he accepted it, I think he just wanted rid, but I expected him to haggle a bit at least.

I've had enough of a drive of it today to get a good impression of it. The looks are growing on me, I'm not really a fan of French cars but in that class I don't think there is much better. It is pretty quiet at idle and reasonably refined. The interior isn't bad but is more "comfortable" than stylish or clinical in a German car.

Visibility is pretty good, the A pillars don't obscure too much, the driving position isn't however the best, the wheel should be telescopic but isn't, it just feels slightly awkward. The seats are OK but the adjustment mechanisms are far too intrusive. The white illuminated dial needles are a nice touch.

It revs fairly easily and sounds quite nice, generally good fun to make progress, but by no means at all quick, it does lose at at the top end to the DTurbo though. The steering weight is just spot on, quite often as in the Clio it is far too assisted and lacks feel, the 206 at least gives you a vague idea of what the front wheels are doing and inspires some confidence. The handling is generally pretty good, a reasonable mix of damping and body control. Not really suited for a lot of motorway driving though. The brakes seem very good, nice and sharp.

The car is seriously let down by the gearbox however, it's just awful, easily the worst box I have ever used. It is vague and sloppy, totally impressive and notchy, but not in a good way. It also feels fragile and you really can't change gear with any speed or confidence, it's just not satisfying at all.

On the whole, it's not bad but due to the gearbox I don't think I could ever recommend one. It is much more sure footed and handles and drives better than the last and last but one generation Clio though. You also have to bare in mind that of late I've been mainly driving a Passat and 11 year old diesel Golf. It's just a general compromise car, apart from the gearbox it doesn't do anything badly yet it doesn't cosset you like a Passat does and isn't a drivers car. It's not hard to see why they're generally driven by people who are not concerned about driving.

What did you think of the dash? My thoughts of a 206CC I had a nose around was that the dashboard itself was made of really quite nasty hard feeling plastic, which spoiled an otherwise rather nice car.

My mum bought a 206 recently. Seems a nice enough car. Certainly jealous of the air-con :(

Not driven it, but I have sat in the drivers seat and been a passenger in it myself.

I felt sea sick after sitting in the drivers seat though. Not used to being so high up.

To be honest I don't think the dash was too bad, it's reasonably well designed which I think is better than the absolute feel of the plastics in a car like that. There's a large gap where the door plastic joins the dash and I don't like the some of the trim on the doors. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the feel of some of the buttons on the air con and the wiper stalks. The glove box feels a bit flimsy but on the whole it feels better built by a long way than my sister's 04 Clio, the doors close with more of a thud.

Fragile? That's an understatement. My '99 206 1.4 LX was on it's third gearbox when I sold it about a year ago. The car had covered 46k when I sold it.

My friend recently got a 206. It's a nice car but there's certain things that annoy me about it. The electric window switches are in the most unconvienient place ever (between the driver and passenger seats), like some Rovers which I hate and you can hear her changing gears from some distance away - It actually sounds like she's not putting the clutch in when she is. Other than that it's not bad in comparison to other cars in its class.

You diss the interior of the Fabia then go buy a 206 with the Elephants Arse dash? I'll concede the Fabia is a bit dull and unadventurious but at it's not hideous.

I drove a rolan garros special edition - I think it's awful, the gearbox is made of Jelly. Interior is plasticky, and very very easily worn, this only had 40k on the clock.

The car also wouldn't be happy with 3 people in it.
The rear boot isn't aligned with the rest of the rear, it sticks out, so shoddy build quality. (no it hasn't been in an accident)

I find the 206 fine.

I was glad to see this review actually, as it normally gets slated.

Driving position/dash/engines I found were adequate.

You can say that again. One of the worst driving positions, I've ever experienced. I really wanted to get a 206GTi when they first came out (loved the shape and the whole Peugeot 'hot hatch' thing) but when I eventually got round to test driving one, the 'long arms short legs' driving position made it practically impossible for to drive for any length of time. When the steering wheel was the right distance away, my knees were hitting the steering wheel. When the pedal positioning was right, I had to stretch for the gearlever etc. I really wanted to buy the car but the driving position just made it impossible for me.

It takes an age to get the seating position right. I found that journeys over about an hour gave me really bad back ache too. Oh one other thing, has anyone else noticed that the mechanism for folding the passengers seat forwards and backwards always breaks!?

In reality most looked like that, worse in some photos...

Agree. It is easily the worst driving position I have ever had, it's a step or two backward from 205. Many car reviewers have commented on its dreadful driving position. I believe Peugeot tends to use style/design over function and it shows in 406 with lack of headroom in the rear and also here's quote from what car magazine: "The 407’s awkward driving position is one of the worst aspects of the car."

You kidding right? It has much more grown-up interior like you would find in bigger cars and made of better & soft plastics.

But in the end, it's all down to anyone's personal preference but I can't help thinking that your girlfriend would lose out to Sokda's much better driving position, comfortable interior and its superior reliability record over Peugeot's.
