Hey all,

Friend is having trouble with her W reg 206. The little digital display which shows the radio, temp, etc etc has gone blank.

Is this a common fault? Whats it likely to be, the display itself, some related wiring, or what?

Ta!

Frenchness.

Just threaten it in your best German accent & it should roll over to have it's tummy tickled in no time.

The clock in my 306 did this about a year ago. Gave it a bit of a tap and its been fine since :p

Is it completely blank or can you still see it if you get the light at the right angle? Just thinking it might be the displays backlight. If not I'd have a shot at it being the connector on the back of the display itself.

My dad had a similar problem with his Citreon Picasso dashboard. The solution was to disconnect the battery for a while (Seems to be the solution to most electrical faults in the Picasso :D)

I heard somewhere that Peugeots can experience similar problems. Perhaps look into it, it's something to do with resetting the computer.

Apparently it works sometimes, but most of the time it doesn't work. It has a greater chance of working if you turn the radio on before you turn the engine on.

OMG @ the frenchness of it all.

On the clio if you pull the radio out it has a small yellow connector that controls the screen and stalk controls, this sometimes came out causing screen / stalk issues, prolly a similar thing at a guess.

I remember reading this is a very common issue with the 206 and needs a replacement unit which costs a few quid...

don't the face lift 206s have some weird fiver optic common electrics back bone-a-majig. Remember reading about it ages ago and thinking "they can't even do normal eletrics right wtf were they thinking trying to do something fancy?!?"

Its the classic, 'would you like some wire with your insulation' way of thinking, after looking at my saxo and clio wires i've seen better quality wire in 10p per meter speaker cable, or perhaps even a 1995 rover.....

My rightside bulb on the aircon has a little thing where it doesnt come on unless I whack the side of the console near my knee, adds a bit of character to the german blandness :p

The later ones (2001> IIRC) use multiplex wiring, as do all recent Pugs and Citroens but it's not fibre based or anything, just normal wire. Means they can send multiple signals down one wire to the various control units in the car, so reducing the amount of wiring and the number of connectors. The theory is it should be more reliable and on the wiring side it probably will prove to be long term, but it's difficult to find faults and all the extra control modules the system introduces are software based and hence can sort of crash and suffer bugs and so exhibit strange behaviour.

I've had 3 multiplexed cars and never had any lasting electrical problems with them, but the radio display could be a bit iffy at times - turning it off and on seemed to sort it.

If that fails then there's always Plan B:
