To celebrate the tenth (!) anniversary of Sonic Team's "Phantasy Star Online" Sega is finally releasing a true sequel, aptly named Phantasy Star Online 2.

Teaser trailer was released on the official (JP) website:

The game is set to be released sometime in 2011, and at this point in time it is looking like it will be PC-only.

Personally I'm a big fan of PSO, so I'm very happy to hear about this. Phantasy Star Universe was a bit lightweight and not really a true sequel, but this new game is said to be much more like the original PSO.

And if anyone wants a blast of nostalgia while they are waiting for this new game, remember that "Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst" can still be played for free on the schthack server. (http://schtserv.com)

Loved PSO. I first played it round a mate's some years ago on the GameCube and was instantly hooked. I don't play it any more, though, but I had a good stint and some on-and-off moments on Blue Burst. I got a good Hunter character with some pretty sweet gear, but always lacked the motivation to grind to lvl200.

Looking forward to a true sequal*, though!

*PSU was pretty rubbish, to be honest.

Here's a little update. :)

First, this small snipet was posted on PSO world at the end of January...

We're all stuck playing the waiting game as we jump at any tiny bit of information or news on Phantasy Star Online 2. Well, a little bit of info came to light recently. Don't jump too high, though! We may have a few more months to go before real news starts to surface.

From the most recent issue of Dengeki Games and via the news site Shougai PSO, an interview with Producer Sakai, Senior Director Terada and Director Suganuma has shed a little more light on PSO2

* Development of PSO2 has been running alongside PSP2 Infinity, so the game is further along in development than some people likely think.
* Some kind of announcement may be made around the end of April, during the finals of the Infinity Grand Prix.
* PSO2 will not be set in either Ragol or Gurhal. Instead, look forward to an even larger setting with numerous planets as indicated by the game's logo.

And... that's all for now. It's not much to work with, but it's definitely a start. Join in the discussion of this news in this thread!

And also this was posted a few days ago on the same site...

Earlier today in Japan at the "Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity Nationwide Fan Thanks Festival 2011 sponsored by Caloriemate," SonicTeam announced that the alpha test for Phantasy Star Online 2 will begin this summer! Entry into the test will not be open; instead, all participants will be selected by lottery. And your first chance at putting your name into the drawing will be by purchasing Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity, which will be released in Japan on February 24. The first printings of the game will include a special code inside the box as designated by a yellow sticker on the outside of the case. This code is required to enter yourself into the alpha test drawing. Keep in mind that only the UMD release of PSP2i will feature this code; the download version will not include the code. Furthermore, Japanese Phantasy Star Universe and previously-subscribed Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst players will have a chance at getting into the test, as codes will be distributed to them, too. Specific details on this method of code distribution will be made public at a later date.

Special thanks to Ryudo for bringing this to our attention! Stay tuned for further information in the coming months!

Update (February 7): Details on the alternate methods of obtaining an alpha test lottery code for Japanese PSU and PSOBB players have been announced!

If you purchased a Hunters License for the Japanese version of Blue Burst at any point between January 1, 2010, and November 30, 2010, then you will receive a lottery code at a later date through the e-mail address you registered with your account. However, if you registered and play via the Hangame version, you will not be included.

Japanese PC/PS2 Phantasy Star Universe players will have three chances at getting a code, as they will be distributed to eligible players in three different batches. Here are the dates of distribution along with the requirements for each.

1. February 24: You must be a premium course player on February 20 or you must have bought 3,000 GC (or more) between January 1 and February 20.
2. Early April: You must be a premium course player on March 31 or you must have bought 3,000 GC (or more) between February 21 and March 31.
3. Early May: You must be a premium course player on April 30 or you must have bought 3,000 GC (or more) between April 1 and April 30.

As before, codes will be sent to eligible players via e-mail. Also, this offer does not extend to those who subscribe to the game through Hangame or those who play the Xbox 360 version. And finally, even if you meet more than one requirement, you will not be sent more than one lottery code. Good luck to all eligible players!

Well it's great to hear that development seems to be coming along nicely, but as a long term fan and previous holder of an official hunters liscense, it's hugely dissapointing to hear that the chances of actually getting into the beta are slim to none. :(

I guess it will be winter before most of us over here get to play it. Lets just hope it's worth the wait. :)

Finally... ;)

As reported at 4Gamer, the video Sega showed at the event had a bunch of phrases that may provide some hints about the game’s background.

First, what appears to be the overarching story:

The ship fleet Oracle (written in Japanese, “????”) which travels the endless stars. A new adventure that awaits on the countless planets. Invasion of the malice that covers the universe. The name of the people who face off against them is Arcs (in Japanese, “????”). Will the universe be saved, or will it be swallowed up? It’s in the hands of the hero (you).

The above is just a super quick translation of 4Gamer’s summary. 4Gamer said that it might have made some errors in its transcript.

The video also mentioned a few key words and phrases:

Is there adventure in today’s RPGs?
Always, to a new field. Random field.
Original Combos
TPS style
Jump Action
Hybrid Custom Action
It gives you a foreboding feeling — seamless weather.
Something will happen every time!? Interrupt event
Aiming for “Endless Advneture.”
The adventure without end, once again.

Phantasy Star series producer Satoshi Sakai took the stage at the event and said that the staff is aiming to give players the feeling of adventure that has been lost in today’s RPGs. He described the game as “a brand new title” and said that he hopes the game will be enjoyed by series fans, online gamers and even players who have yet to get into online games.

Further details on the game will be released ahead of the alpha test, which kicks off this summer.

Oh Japan with your lovely Anime but totally inappropriate armour designs for the females. :p

They definitely took their lessons learn't from the Universe games for the combat mechanics that's for sure.

While graphically it doesn't look too impressive, it still keeps the same colourful visual artstyle that fits well with the series.

Love the music in the preview trailer since it's the same synth-style that the previous game's soundtracks are known for.

^ Lucky you!

I was only 16 and starting Sixth Form when it first came out.

Freeserve dial-up off-peak was my ISP I had to use at the time. I remember it was a pain in the arse to get the free CD that enabled you to use your/existing/any ISP of choice, otherwise you was forced to whatever local rate price whenever you used the telephone line. The Broadband adapter option was too late by the time as well, but then the game ran flawlessly on dial-up.

One of my fave games ever on dreamcast, untill the cheaters and dupers ruined it.

i was about i was around 14-16 when this came out i was quite new to online gaming at the time, pso and quake 3 i managed to run up a huge phone bill. Its a shame sega didnt get a cut of phonebills people ran up they may be still making consoels today if they did :)

Might give the pc version ago for old times sake do many people play it on that server?

There's usually 200-300 online at any given time. And if you've never played it before, "Blue Burst" was much improved over the original versions, with new weapons/areas/bugfixes etc.

The download links on the schthack main site probably won't work, but you can get it from their forum instead. Information>Technical Support>BB Tech Support>BB Installers patches and files.

I've had the same kind of history, i ended up with a lv137 hucast i think. It gets a bit boring when you cant play online and do the same forest level over and over for xp

I remember playing PSO on the Dreamcast back in 2000 and it was really cool at the time, all be it I didn't play online until I got the Xbox version in 2002/3.

I must admit I'm really looking forward to this comming out as I rather fancy a new online game. I just hope that Europe will see it released before the end of the year.

High res version of the trailer out now :

Even if you watched the original video from a few days ago, this version is definitely worth looking at. It gives a clean, detailed look at the character designs, storyline, user interface, and gameplay footage for Rangers and Hunters.

Source.
