Phenom II X3 720 to a Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955

Hi ive got a Phenom II X3 720 and wanted to know if i upgraded to a Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 would i see a difference in performance. i play games and encode. should i wait into they have gone down in price first.

yes for encoding because of the extra core.

I tryed it but my motherboard doesn't have the option in bios.

Is this a good board to overclock on. Asus M4N82 Deluxe nForce 980a because the one i have got now is not that good. and can you unlock the 4th core on this board.

only unlock on AMD chipset boards that have SB710 or greater.

It would be cheaper just to get a new board... like that Asus 785G one. With or without crossfire support it's one of the best for the price.

But there is the risk that he buys the board with the correct support only to find the 4th core is defective or unstable.

No, Windows doesn't have to be re-installed when you change a CPU. If you go from single core to 2 or more the OS SHOULD change to a MP pc setup, changing the 'hal' file to suit. This can sometimes fail on XP, but Vista seems not to have this issue.

The only issue with the bios is making sure your motherboard is compatable with the CPU you want to use. Sometimes you have to flash a new bios to accomodate a new CPU, but you will have to check the CPU compatability list on the web site for your motherboard manufacturer.
