I can do layers and stuff, its just the picky bit of the selection process that gets me

Ay, at home I can use my wacom cintiq - makes the selection process very easy

You'll have to sift through the inevitable spurts of complaints and flaming because the tattoo isn't something that certain people like or because tattoo's are pointless in some peoples eyes.

Pen Tool is the god of selection in my mind - I know others use different tools that are quicker, but I absolutely love the Pen Tool for doing this

Could someone do one quickly with a solid red/black star with writing to suit, also one in a lightish blue/black please
Yes its for a tattoo, but only a small one to cover up a scar. Not great but ive seen worse (have worse dont judge me)

Not great but you will have it permanently for the rest of your life. How about waiting until you find one that is "great"?
Because it would look better than the scar and it can always be covered
