Physical disc production ending in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles

Can you help me understand how only being able to buy your games from PS Store at whatever price Sony decides, has potential upsides?

Keeping physical, you still have the option for digital if that's your preference.
Reducing distribution costs and ending the freeloading rental market will result in more money going to developers. Perhaps they'll use that money to make better games, perhaps we'll see more frequent digital sales if they become profitable sooner, or if you think they'll just give it all to the shareholders there's nothing to stop you from becoming a shareholder.

There are literally no upsides to only being able to buy games from one place. Publishers can now charge whatever prices they want for games and there's nothing anybody can do about it.
Wrong, the market decides what they can charge. They can already set the price to whatever they want for both physical and digital, removing physical doesn't change that.

I don’t mind paying £70 for a digital game. I am very selective though and I’ll only go for it if I know it’s something I will really enjoy and play through multiple times - like a Spider-Man 2, Ghost of Yotei or Resident Evil Requiem. Single player games I know I will love from developers I am a fan of. A couple of regrets this gen (BF6, Baldurs Gate 3) but mostly I nail it.

We have a fairly good idea that it would make less money because pricing isn’t set on a hope and prayer. It’s already set to extract the maximum amount of revenue from the market over the products full lifecycle.

It’s a heavily researched and is a topic which is focus grouped the snuff out of. There is a huge amount of data and analytics which support this and it’s part of the service package the likes of Steam offer to developers/publishers.

It’s well within the storefronts interests to support revenue maximisation as they make more money at the same time.

This doesn’t just apply to games, it basically applies to everything. There is an entire multi-billion £ industry set up around market research.

I'm not overly arguing, and i'm sure they do huge amounts of research, mostly to maintain the status quo.. but it feels a bit like the old, if we detect 1000 pirated copies that's 1000 lost sales, which is total bs.. as there is no way those 1000 people would have purchased the game..

nyhoo.. as i've said a few times, I guess we'll never know.. my feeling is there are a lot more people who are not willing to pay £70 than the numbers that are, and if you could find a price where you could get the majority to buy we'd all win..

I’m not sure why the they don’t allow resale of digital copies, would alleviate most of the complaints.

Gives people that don’t want to pay full price a chance to pick up a cheaper copy.

Gives people the chance to sell on when they’re finished if they want.

Gives the platform holders the chance to take another bite of margin.

Would kill off bricks and mortar stores doing physical resells but the writing has been on the wall long enough.

I thought the original argument for digital games would be it would be great for gamers, making it cheaper as there'd be no costs for physically manufacturing the games or posting them.

£70 for a digital copy makes a lie of that.

A digital marketplace is the dream. Not sure how far or if ever we’ll get to that though.

100% agree. And personally I think it has to happen at some stage. Maybe the Sony push could be the tipping point.

I think it won't happen until there is some sort of high profile situation where people lose access to a number of games in their library. I have to imagine someone is going to take Sony to court over the removal of those 500 films from people's accounts although whether or not they will succeed will be interesting as no doubt Sony will say they only sold a licence and the users never owned the films.

It’s not really a surprise that single player campaign based games sell more on disc. Many are very much a ‘one and done’ thing with many players having no interest in playing them again.

Terrible decision by Sony, would be great if Xbox came out and said they'll keep making discs, might up their market share before Sony crumble

Yeah, thats how it was sold to everyone years ago. But it was all smoke and mirrors.

That's probably true for some, but I know plenty of people who keep the discs for the games they enjoy. It's not quite as black & white as you suggest. And I would question Sony's wisdom of alienating consumers who purchase physical media / play tentpole games, in favour of supporting casual gamers who only play the likes of EA Sports FC - most of them won't be buying a PS6 at £1000+. They'll stick with the previous gen hardware or move to a cheaper platform.

I have nearly all the discs I've ever owned (except a few that got good resale prices, although I regret that now) along with the consoles going back to the PS1.

Not a hoarder, definitely not a hoarder

E: And yes I like looking at them. Well I occasionally like looking at the cupboard that has the boxes with them in.
