Interested to know this as well.
Are people who can actually very easily afford a very very decent/brand new 911 now saying the Boxster is as good/better?
People have always said the Boxster is an amazing car, but the 911 has always been just that tiny bit better. The only people who didn't agree tended to not actually be able to afford a 911 and owned the Boxster so there was an obvious reason.
Well as you know, the Boxster wasn't a financial decision for us, I could easily have walked away with the new 911 as well so I feel that at least in this case, the opinion was based entirely on their abilities, rather than the cost.
I drove the new 911 for a day about a month or so ago and again recently as I was contemplating the idea of getting one when I trade in the GTR. I was impressed with what Porsche had done with the 911, in that the interior is now finally befitting of a $100k car and the engine/transmission were typically Porsche - refined and well put together.
That said, I was left a little underwhelmed by the new 911, it's a great car no doubt but I didn't even leave the dealership with one ounce of interest in making the trade. I was however, immensely excited to see the new Boxster, ever since its announcement a few months back.
We actually had no intention of buying the Boxster S at all, I was merely in the area and decided to exercise my invitation to the launch party. In the flesh, the new Boxster is staggeringly beautiful, IMO far prettier than the 991 while retaining the stunning interior from its bigger brother. Again, it's nice to have an interior that doesn't look out of place in an $80k sports car.
After a brief look around, I grabbed the keys and took it out for a blast. I'm not easily impressed but I was blown away by the way it drove. I can't actually believe it's only 315hp, it feels far more like high 3's and it pulls magnificently all the way to the 7800rpm redline with a glorious sound. Turn in is immense, none of the nervousness or lightness associated with either the 997 or the 991 and it was so composed and balanced on the throttle. To my surprise for a mid engine car, you can actually really get it sideways without it wanting to bite you, quite different to the last generation of Cayman/Boxster.
Both of my local dealers have 991's sitting on the lot, loads of them as they're just not selling well after the initial rush. Most of the customers that bought the new Boxster this weekend were current 997/991 owners and the general consensus is that the Boxster is now the more fun, arguably better car - Porsche finally took the reins off the Boxster, they've realized they can't prevent the 911 from having competition anymore and as such have built what I can honestly say, this side of the Carrera GT and GT3, is probably the best car they've ever made.
