Picked up a new Boxster (981) and an SVT Raptor

I dont get all the Boxster/911 comparison people do. They are different types of car for a start?

The 911 is a 2+2 and the Cayman and Boxster simply aren't. So many 911 owners I know prefer/need the flexibility of being able to stick a couple of kids in the rear seats and this is why they go with the 911. I think people overlook this point as to many owners, it's vital.

True and I understand the point. The comparisons people make though tend to be the actual driving experience.

For me, that's what would make me decide between the two. I have no use for 2 back seats - but they would be nice, equally I have no real use for the second rear boot in the Boxster - but it is nice to have. My decision over which car to buy (could I afford both) would simply come down to which drove better/I liked more.

Interested to know this as well.

Are people who can actually very easily afford a very very decent/brand new 911 now saying the Boxster is as good/better?

People have always said the Boxster is an amazing car, but the 911 has always been just that tiny bit better. The only people who didn't agree tended to not actually be able to afford a 911 and owned the Boxster so there was an obvious reason.

The thing is with Boxster / Cayman, they are easy to drive fast, very fast, the chassis inspires huge amounts of confidence.

The 911 to the in-experienced driver feels a bit more like it wants to eat you and spit you out, it takes a lot more time to feel at one in a 911.

Having driven a Boxster, Cayman, Cayman R within 30 minutes of being in the car I'm sliding around, drifting and driving them at 10/10th's, they are easy to drive fast and hugely capable and rewarding. They say the new 991 drives more like the mid-engined cars but still has some 911 traits.

Wheras in my 911 sometimes I still hold back, you have to be 110% in the groove and up for it to push it hard, otherwise it will just hurt you. The 911 when you get it right is ultimately rewarding more so than any of the others, but the Cayman / Boxster it can be argued they are more fun at lower speeds and tamer.

Think of it like this, the Cayman R is a trained race horse. Wheras the 911 is a Wild horse, both just as capable but both very different to ride.

I'd guess the new 911 (991) sits somewhere in the middle.

Well as you know, the Boxster wasn't a financial decision for us, I could easily have walked away with the new 911 as well so I feel that at least in this case, the opinion was based entirely on their abilities, rather than the cost.

I drove the new 911 for a day about a month or so ago and again recently as I was contemplating the idea of getting one when I trade in the GTR. I was impressed with what Porsche had done with the 911, in that the interior is now finally befitting of a $100k car and the engine/transmission were typically Porsche - refined and well put together.

That said, I was left a little underwhelmed by the new 911, it's a great car no doubt but I didn't even leave the dealership with one ounce of interest in making the trade. I was however, immensely excited to see the new Boxster, ever since its announcement a few months back.

We actually had no intention of buying the Boxster S at all, I was merely in the area and decided to exercise my invitation to the launch party. In the flesh, the new Boxster is staggeringly beautiful, IMO far prettier than the 991 while retaining the stunning interior from its bigger brother. Again, it's nice to have an interior that doesn't look out of place in an $80k sports car.

After a brief look around, I grabbed the keys and took it out for a blast. I'm not easily impressed but I was blown away by the way it drove. I can't actually believe it's only 315hp, it feels far more like high 3's and it pulls magnificently all the way to the 7800rpm redline with a glorious sound. Turn in is immense, none of the nervousness or lightness associated with either the 997 or the 991 and it was so composed and balanced on the throttle. To my surprise for a mid engine car, you can actually really get it sideways without it wanting to bite you, quite different to the last generation of Cayman/Boxster.

Both of my local dealers have 991's sitting on the lot, loads of them as they're just not selling well after the initial rush. Most of the customers that bought the new Boxster this weekend were current 997/991 owners and the general consensus is that the Boxster is now the more fun, arguably better car - Porsche finally took the reins off the Boxster, they've realized they can't prevent the 911 from having competition anymore and as such have built what I can honestly say, this side of the Carrera GT and GT3, is probably the best car they've ever made.

I think the new boxster is the best looking car Porsche currently make, I love it. Looks really great in red, people that slate it don't have a clue what they are talking about. It's a properly quick wonderfuly balanced sports car. Any one that says its a poor mans 911 is jealous or foolish.

Nice that the boxster finally looks good from all sides. I would love one but I'm not sure I could deal with people taking the / out of me tho.

Nice car not sure about the Ford, looks very work like.

Better to be talked about than invisible. In my experience people who have an opinion on everyone else do it to divert attention from themselves, so why you'd be worried what people taking the whatever out of you is beyond me. Are you going to chop your nose off to spit your face just because some hiary bloke on telly has told everyone what they should think?

Really?

Seriously I don't get this deal people have with boxsters. This new model is supposed to be an awesome car, it looks beautiful. I would be well chuffed (just a tad!) to own one and if anyone ever said anything to me about my imaginary new boxster I would say, well what do you drive? Because mines a 300bhp porsche...
