Is that just FoamCore?

Nice link btw. Will watch when I can!

It's 3 wire framed white fabriced panels which fold down into a the back inone nice flat pack, I have one of these and have used it many times, for smaller items it's really good!

I would also recommend the use of the bath too, with a bit of lighting it makes a great background.

Might want to check out this thread...

Wowsers what a great link  some cracking ideas on that site !

PS: Will my Fuji F31FD be ok to use for this?

Having looked it up yes, it should do the job as it has aperture and shutter priority modes.

When shooting this close DOF may be an issue with some compacts so you may have to put it in to Aperture Priority and choose one that gets the entire product in focus :)

You will need to use constant lighting as it might not have the abilities to use several off camera flashes.

The only real thing you can do is try it and see what happens :)

You might need to invest in a small tripod like a gorrilapod. Get a cheap knock off one from china on ebay :)

Thanks for your reply.

We have a Gorrilapod - not used it yet so will need to get flashing I think (in a non naked way) :D

^^^

Hope it worked out with the Gorrilapod.

I had ago at creating the effect your were going for also.
Below was done with some reflective vinyl surface, a softbox (as backdrop), two bounce cards and two flashes.

I agree completely. There is nowt wrong with ghetto. Strobist snoots made of black drinking straws, bounce cards made or white card all rock !

But getting good results - that's where the skill and experience comes in. Especially on shiny things where you are dealing with reflections, specular highlights etc etc. Not an easy thing to start on.

A spanner is cheap, but fixing an engine using the spanner takes skill, knowledge and experience.

If the OP were selling mobile phones on ebay then I would be the first to say "have a go", but jewellery on a commercial website will succeed or fail to a large degree on the quality of the images taken of a difficult subject !

I just think that starting a new business is always hard and getting the important bits right is vital.

Another +1 from me. Sound advice.

That said, I know a few pack shot companies that if you sent them 520 pieces of jewellery, they wouldn't really do anything more complicated than what's been outlined above. They'd just do it tethered and automated, then bend you over! The benefit is in the time saved, but tends to be advantageous for established companies rather than start-ups. Shouldn't cost you much to give it a go yourself, though you may find yourself going a little mad by the 500th necklace!
