Who is going to win the battle of the fastest single GPU card ?

AMD or Nvidia

Im going with AMD

Hard to say. If you mean fastest GPU at stock with no overclocking, then that could be the 580. But the 6970 could surprise me :)

Either way I think it will be very close. What I do think will happen is, the 6970 will be the best bang for buck card and hence the winner.

I can see thread going down hill fast but for the sake of argument I think it will be very close between the 580/ 6970 with each coming in to its own at various resolutions in various games. I don't think there will be a clear cut winner, lifes never that easy!

Seeing as the AMD strategy is multicore for the high end id assume that the 580 will be slightly faster than the 6970, but obviously the 580 will get obliterated by the 6990.

If AMD have the fastest card then they won't have it for long, Nvidia seemed obsessed with having the fastest single product are bound to react with an improved product to claim the fastest single GPU card judging history.

I think the 580 will hit the shelves at £450 and be 20% faster than 480 and be quieter

I think 6970 will be released at £350 and will be 95% the performance of 580 and cooler and quieter. I expect 6970 to have double the tesselation power of 5870 but still be comprehensively beaten by Nvidia when tesselation levels are extreme.

My guess would be 5870 < 6950 < 480 < 6970 < 580 < 6990.

AMD seem more interested in keeping the core size small and economical than achieving the fastest single GPU.

If the 6970 was faster than the 580 why would they price it 100 cheaper than a 580? They could make more money if they pushed the price up and they can because it would be faster than the 580 (But thats if its faster than the 580).

Im expecting btoh cards to be similiar in raw grunt maybe ~5% off for either one but the 580 will be better at Tesselation/DX11 titles and the performance with 3D will be much much better on with the 580 and 3D is the future in gaming so I think the 580 will be the better card.

This might be quite accurate with the exception of pricing. I think the prices will be lower by some £30 or so.

I reckon the 6970 will perform 7% faster than the 580 on average.

580 will take the lead however with tessellation and piszX of course.

Its safe to say the GTX480 will get a very tough time from the HD5850 replacement, if the 5770 to 6870 move is even close to performance representation between the high end cards.

If the 6970 is 20% + faster than a GTX480 they are in with a very good shout of taking the crown.

Pricing is gonna be interesting imo... if the 580 didn't come out first I think the 6970 would be quite a lot more expensive than people are thinking, but with competition it will probably be a little less excessive.
