Not true, an Egypt Air Airbus crashed at sea a couple of years ago (I was watching a documentory about a Canadian Airbus that ran out of fuel and set a gliding record to make it to the Azors) and about 25% of the passengers survived.

*Note some of the details may not be correct and wine is to blame.

iirc, that wasn't "at sea" it was just off the coast and could be prepered for by coastgard etc as they knew what would happen, but I'd not call that crashing either, I'm talking about somthing going wrong and there being a real crash rather than gliding down.

A pilot flying over the spot earlier today saw a stricken aircraft on the surface of the water.

When he returned for a second pass he could see no sign of it, or of any life rafts or debris.

Sounds like it has sunk, hopefully with nobody still onboard, but doesn't sound like it. :(

The EgyptAir crash wasn't prepared for. Hijackers were forcing the pilot to fly to Australia (not understanding about fuel loadouts etc etc) and they of course ran dry and went down. True, it was a controlled descent but the plane broke up on impact quite badly. As far as i'm aware, tourists who were on the beach at the time (hence the video clip of the crash that is pretty famous) were the ones who swam out to help the survivors.

Edited to add: I don't think the airline was EgyptAir now I think of it, i'll try and find out which one it was

Yes there has. Remember that video of a plan going down into the sea close to some beach? Well people survived that.

Hm, cant say I remember that one. Dont think I saw the video.

How long ago was it?

It was the one in the post before me. I shall see if can find it.

Edit...

I lied, it is this really...

1996: Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 crashed into the Indian Ocean near a beach in the Comoros Islands after hijackers refused to allow the pilot to land and refuel the plane. 125 passengers die and 50 survive. This is only the third incident in which there were survivors of a passenger jet that intentionally ditched into water.

My uncle works on the search and rescue team at Lydd airport, I do imagine he will be involved with the rescue procedure at the moment.

Having just spoke to my mother she tlls me that the UKs largest power station is in Dungeness, I wonder if that may have something to do with it.

Ah... I think I remember seeing that. Pilot did a good job landing it as safe as he could into the water considering.

Back to today's crash... Updated sky news site. Now says that a plane did take off from a near by airport but still in the air taking aerial photographs.

Im thinking that when the plane flew over and saw the plane in the water, it could have been sometime last night. Doesnt say when it was spotted first. could have been the earlier this morning, first thing.

Wondering why, if the plane did go down, why was'nt there any signals made that the plane was in trouble.

If they cant find the plane now and looks to be under the water, there isnt much hope for any survivors.

Im sure that the plane that spotted it in the first place has a good idea where it was... I would get divers out there to see if there is a wreckage under water.
