At the moment I have a Pioneer PDP-506FDE 50" Plasma fed by an Arcam DV137 DVD player. The Arcam will upscale to 1080P and my current screen output is displayed at 1125i on startup by default via HDMI.

I know my plasma won't display at 1080P but its replacement - the PDP-507XD - will display at 1080/24P, whatever that is. Here's the specification - http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/products/62/63/413/PDP-507XD/index.html

However, Pioneer have a true 1080P ultra-high resolution 50" Plasma display (no TV Tuner) called the PDP-5000EX - http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/products/62/925/12269/PDP-5000EX/index.html

I'm not particulary bothered by the lack of built-in TV tuner but am interested in knowing whether either panel will display a higher quality image either with my DV137 or with other HD sources.

Anyone know?

I think the 1080/24p refers to it's ability to show 24fps versus 60fps. Apart from having read that 24fps is better(which is odd as you'd assume the reverse) than 60fps when I've seen people comparing blueray players vs PS3 I can't help much further.

[edit] I believe films are originally coded for cinema at 24fps so ability to display at this setting is desireable as 60fps can introduce artifacting.

It may look slightly better due to the screen actually supporting true 1080P (or FULL HD as many of the manufacturers will start calling it next year) but you may need a FULL HD DVD player to really see the benifit.

I saw a FULL HD 46" LCD hooked up to a 1080P signal in Germany this year alongside a normal HD Ready (1080i) 46" LCD and could only just make out the difference. And this was at an Electronics Trade Show.

What the 1080P screen would show though, its a much sharper picture from a 1080P HD DVD player, or if they ever get it working a Blue Ray machine....

But in my eyes, Blue ray is going to lose this version of the BetaMax v VHS war (and BetaMax was far better quality then VHS but still lost in many peoples eyes).

Which would be nice if there was anything that could output 24fps.

If its just for DVD's I wouldn't bother with the screen upgrade. If you have other HD sources then go for it, 50" is where 1080 starts to make a difference.
