Hi guys,
I would like to be able to play a bit of a presentation on a screen behind a bar. (Special offers, special welcomes to certain groups of people etc etc)
The problem I have at the moment is that space is of an issue. I could just about fit a 22inch screen up on the wall however there is no space for even a mini computer anywhere else unfortunately. I was wondering of the simplest and cheapest way of playing a PowerPoint(?) Presentation via either a usb/memory card or maybe via a Google Chrome device or something similar?

The TV in our reception area at work runs a memory stick with a video on like Neil mentioned.

We have a Chrome Cast in one of our meeting rooms but it requires something to be connected to it at all times to serve the video - e.g., a phone or whatever broadcasting it.

And failing all that you could also use a Raspberry PI - they take up barely any room at all. You can then just have it stream a website, presentation (with libreoffice), video - whatever you want :).

Was just about to mention that - you'll need a micro USB charger. The OcUK one is out of stock but as long as the current is high enough any Android/Windows Phone USB charger should work. I believe it needs to be 700mA+.

As for a case just pick whatever you like. It doesn't really need a case if you really wanted to safe space, just duct-tape it to the back of the TV :).

Buy a Samsung Digital Signage screen.
It will play PPT/video/images etc automatically from a USB without a PC at all. You can even used the remote control to flick through channels of different content like a normal TV.

Its a professional solution designed for this sort of installation.

You will get warranty, a specialist software platform, and easy maintenance, with no external cables/OS or PC to manage.

You can even network it and use the software solution to manage it remotely, set schedules, and content channels.

I work in the industry.

Perfect thanks. I'll nip out and get these now. What software will play power point files? Any idea?

that's exactly what I originally posted for, I was amazed I couldn't find something that was purpose built for the job. I'm going to go down the raspberry route now as its half the price. But that's a great suggestion. Thanks

Haha, happy to help.

If you change your mind, send me a trust and I can put you in touch with a uk reseller. The prices quoted online are usually much higher than actual prices when bought through the right channels.

I was looking at buying a new TV and had a look in Currys and John Lewis (JL). I asked the salesman in JL about the high standard of picture on the screen and if the TVs were connected to a satellite etc. He pointed out that each of the TVs were displaying HD pictures direct from memory sticks.

So funkyphantom if you wanted to see it in action perhaps you could go to one of the showrooms.

Yep :).

You can set-up Kiosk mode to auto loop/repeat it too.

Got all the kit. Installed raspbian on the pi installed libreoffice. All up and running. What I want to do now, (and this is where my limited knowledge runs dry) is because I want to keep the monitor area as clean as possible, with no keyboard or mouse, is it possible to turn everything on, plug in a usb stick then have the PowerPoint presentation automatically run throughout the day?

I haven't done it on Linux but did do this on a windows pc.

If you save the powerpoint as a powerpoint show and put it in the startup folder (Linux equivalent) then it will play fullscreen in Kiosk mode.

I also set the mouse cursor to hide after inactivity and put the antivirus in silent mode / turned off any annoying notifications.

It worked ok but no-one seemed to pay any attention to it, think it was too small.
