Hi, I would like to be able to watch movies using a Optoma HD65 in 720p , problem is I only have my laptop atm as a source (vga only). I am new to all this and would like to know how best to set it up? Do I need and XBox360 or PS3 to play them through? Would be a nice excuse to buy one. Not interested in buying a standalone player. Would love to be able to play the movies via my laptop if poss with 720p

Provided the laptop graphics are up to the job, you should just be set its resolution to 720p (1280x720) and then connect to the projector via VGA.

Whether or not the laptop is capable of decoding HD streams is another question.

Powerstrip might sort out the resolution for you.

I am assuming you have some sort of AV amp and speakers.

I have the same projector and use an XBOX360. However, in order to play HD films you need a now obsolete HD-DVD drive, or a media server somewhere that the 360 can stream HD films from.

PS3 obviously plays Bluray disks and does lots of other cool stuff as well.

It all comes down to how much money you want to spend. The better (and more expensive) solution is without a doubt the PS3.
The cheap and quick solution is the XBOX360 but you will probably regret it 3 months down the line when there are no more HD-DVDs left to watch!

I was tempted to buy a cheap xbox from one of the supermarkets, is there anyway you can play movies directly from the ps3 and not using the blu ray player? Thank you.

Also, can you use the hdmi on a ps3 for video and the av multi-out or optical for phono? I would like temporarily to use my amp and two speakers for audio. Thank you.
