New firmware has been released.
Version: v7.06.r2901

http://www.playonhd.com/en/#support

Note:
Copy install.img to the root directory of a USB flash drive and connect it to the USB host port of the player.
Enter the Setup menu, System, System Update, System Upgrade and Enter to confirm.
Please wait for the flashing to complete until the Playon! HD restarts by itself.
Do not power off the unit during the flashing process!

The HDMI connection may reset after updating the firmware and may go out of sync with your display.
Press the TV SYS button on the remote a few times to sync with a compatible display mode if this happen.
Once the display is back, we recommend setting to HDMI Auto in the video setup menu unless a manual mode is preferred.

Attention:
Please note that version v7.0.6 r2901 is based on the latest SDK version 3.
Should you need to roll back to an earlier version, you may be required to reformat the internal HDD through the Playon!HD system.

Model:
AC Ryan ACR-PV73100 Playon!HD

is this the best media player out there?

im looking at the asus version, as well as western digital live tv.

this has onboard hard drive capabilities and plays almost everything, are there any disadvantages to this box?

ordered the xtreamer from fle.bay with cooler and wireless bits on.

is this PLAYHD better im not entirely sure they have a lot of the same thing coming, i hear DLink has got a great one called boxee sumtin... with linux installed.

Aslso like the asrock 330 but you need to build that urself not doing to well myself as i cannot get them to run the 1080p 24p perfctly judderring a lot for me on windows 7 and linux bit better but ned to tweak it not sure what i need to do.

Ive got a WDHDTV. Never had any problems with 1080p stuff, or i have but only on planet earth on the great plains scene where it zooms out from all the birds. (Stuttered for a second or 2 and sound went funny) That was when it was connected with RCA, not HDMI

What I do get is out of sync voices to the picture, this is really annoying. It happens with all sorts of files whether its 320x240 quality or 1080p. Is that just a problem with the media file? Is there a way to stop/reduce it?

If you don't need RMVB support (generally the non-asian market), there are better/cheaper alternatives out there.
I only bought the Playon HD because I wanted a player that can play 1080p Real Media files and has wireless capability.

The only real disadvantage I can think of is I don't like the menu system and the wireless receiver is balls. Max speed on 802.11n is around 3MB/s so streaming 1080p is out of the picture.

the only thing i need the box to do is basically play files i have downloaded and put onto a usb hard drive, i dont "need" any other function but its good to have them, western digital live hd player does this and a little more, like youtube, etc. or i could just get their new v2 of the smaller player for cheaper.

who has the best image quality? im guessing its western digital due to the better components used. is this correct? their player is sub £100, is there any other sub £100 player with better image quality?

I have to say im loving the Xtreamer its not only Fast but picture Quality from 1080p is gorgeous. I have the popcorn a110 too but for value for money this is awesome. Easy to trasnfer files loading quick, has to best media player for the mone no doubt!

free wireless N included and i would advise get the xtreme cooler!

takes 2.5" drives too can add a dvd or blu via usb! My boss ordered one just after 10mins of checking it out he also has popcorn a110.

Plays 1080p with out any issues. awaiting for the Beta of the jukebox to improve, as i love those moviejukeboxes look awesome got one on the popcorn!

you must check it out xtreamer media player

Bit of a bump, but it's only a fortnight!

I'm thinking of ordering the AC Ryan Playon!HD Mini tommorrow morning.

Does it handle all video fine? What about iso's?

I pretty much only watch divx, but it's good knowing what files it supports.

Any other options I should be looking at? I don't need an internal HDD, everything is over the network. Don't need wireless either as our house has wired points all over.

Playon! HD handles from what I know every format I throw at it!

POHD/Mini is fine. They basically play any popular file formats out there.

The only thing I can fault with AC Ryan are their firmwares. They fix one thing and break another. My advice is only upgrade if you have problems.

Damn ordered one now! My needs are modest tbh. Just want playback of divx and very rarely an mkv file.

I think the consensus on avforums was that all the media streamers have there issues and none of them work 100%, I just went with one that seemed to have least issues, regular updates and a nice GUI.

I guess I will find out if it's good this weekend!

I'm pretty surprised you opted for the POHD Mini when all you want to play are divx and mkv files. I'm sure there are better/cheaper players out there.
Most people I know buy the POHD because it supports RM/RMVB formats. Most Anime/Asian (chinese/japanese/korean) dramas are encoded in RM/RMVB.
If I didn't need a player that supported Real Media files, I would've gone for something else.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll be more than happy with the mini.

I have the wi-fi adapter for the player and to be honest it is rubbish. Transfer speed over my network (wireless N) is around 2MB/s and usually drops to around 1.2MB/s.
This is ok for streaming SD videos but HD is a no no. Also using wireless to transfer videos onto the player is very time consuming, a 7GB file takes over an hour.
I know you will be using ethernet but I thought I'd just say in-case someone else was considering the wi-fi adapter.

Well the mini has been delivered, along with my new Panasonic BD-60 Blu-ray player :D

I am very impressed with the playon!HD mini, GUI is easy to follow and setting it up with NFS access was simple.

It plays everything I have got and plays the subtitles on a couple of chinese films I have got.

tchan_4 - Thanks for your comments, I was looking at the Sumvision and one by Hisense, they were £20 cheaper and I didn't like the look of the Hisense remote. The Sumvision was an option but it looked fairly big as it can take a 3.5" HDD. I also read on avforums about a few problems with the Sumvision, maybe it would have been fine...

I wanted a player that could play everything, I don't want to have to buy another one in 5 years if that makes sense.

First impressions? 9.8/10 :p

I'm looking at putting 9 of these playhd mini's in each room of the new house build connected to my video share of my WHS

Can anyone see any issues with this?

Also does the mini support the Harmony one remote?
