Im a little suprised that the PS3 is only using nVidia's 7800gtx gfx chip...

I'd have thought that they would have invested in either the very latest gfx chip or a specialist one as the PS3 will be here for ages and is obviously not upgradable.

Sounds old hat to start with to me... esp if PS3 does put out at 1080P (no chance!).

The PS3 has been in development ages, it would be too costly for a console manufacturer to keep updating the spec every time something knew is out and that would probably come out of our pockets to boot.

This is why I am a PC gamer. ;)

You also have to remember that developers will have one platform with one configuration (in general) to work with when developing for consoles which enables them to ru at their best on all machines.

It's the 7900 gtx in the ps3 and console gfx chips always run games better than pc ones. The ps2 is 6 years old yet what pc would you need to run gran turismo 4?

and due to it being a console its not actually this gpu - its just based on it

Its not pc architecture at all so dont try and compare

Exactly I doubt at the time of the ps2 that a pc could play gt4 at 1080i 25fps.

It's supposed to be able to off-load a load of things to the Cell aswell to speed it up.

<obligatory fanboy comment> just buy a 360 tbh!

Console graphics are a lot different then pc graphics..., the console doesnt have to think about masses of OS code or additional applications, take into consideration all the different types of components PC's have to negotiate with..., whereas a console only has to think about games(all of which is usually read from discs, not much cached etc...) everything in a console was designed to work together, not to accomodate for different hardware, drivers etc...

hmmm does this mean that the PS3 cant render AA and HDR simultaneously? tis gonna get pretty jagged @ 720p

7800GTX in a PS3 and costing up to ~£500 pffft... *sticks with my PC*

Was that a serious comment or were you being ironic?

All this talk about how the 7800GTX is old and doesn't compare to high end PC's is irrelivent tbh, you cannot directly compare a games console to a PC. For a start, the PS3 has the Cell processor which works with the RSX. And as already mentioned, the game developers can get more out of the PS3 since all games are optimised for specific hardware which is the same in every console.

How would I go about enabling it? There doesnt seem to be any mention of it in the options or the manual

You need a game that supports it.

SC3 does in the USA, but the UK version doesnt for example. The same thing goes for 1080I for GT4.

Some pal games like Soul Calibur 2 and Tekken 4/5 do support it though.

To use it, you need PS2 component cables, and go to the display options in PS2, and turn it from RGB to component output. Then just use it in game.

Some games have the option hidden, to use it in those games, hold Triangle and X as the game starts.

480i is NTSC standard tv resolution.

720P is the common uk HD format and the 7800GTX would manage that fine, never mind a special PS3 version.

Considering the PS3 will probably stick to 1280x720 for most games the 7800GTx/7900GTx chip should handle that fine, then remember all games will be able to be optmised for the specific hardware instead of having to cater for goodness knows how many PC configurations.

Was that a serious comment or were you being ironic?

I can't believe it was anything but ironic, a 7900GTx is just over £300 and you can get a PS3 (full system) for just over £400...bargain tbh*

*still damn expensive for a console IMO!
