Plea to ban motorists washing their cars in the street.

okay look.

I wash my car in the street, so I'd rather not have this law.

But... if I was the guy in charge of the drainage system and I knew that car cleaning products were a problem...

What's the lesser evil

Problem is.. it's not the drainage guy complaining - it's a car wash guy. guess he needs more business.

Have a colleague form Germany who told me that this is already law over there

yup that's right...one observation/difference is the quality of the automated car washes between the UK and Germany. Wouldn't dare to use most of the automated car washes over here (not to mention some of the more dubious manual car wash facilities/businesses) looking at their overall state, appearance, operators, condition of brushes plus some bad experiences with previous cars, so washing by hand is pretty much the only "safe" option here in the UK....which I always considered as bit of a gap in the market.
Given a quality automated UK car wash alternative I wouldn't wash my car by hand as I have better things to do on a weekend (even though it can be very therapeutic:p...wax on; wax off, wax on, wax off, wax on....) .

I'm a bit confused - Cars get dirty as they're outside, which is the environment. People wash the cars to remove the dirt. No more dirt is entering the environment, it's just being moved off the paint work.

Ok - so oils / chemicals from soaps etc... are not natural but how diluted must these be from average joe washing their car once every few months. We've got to be talking non-measurable quantities of these chemicals entering the environment.

I'd be more concerned about over cleaners, bleaches entering the water from inside the house...

This is quite simply not a problem IMO. A detailing company, using concentrated chemicals daily is a different matter.

“My members are already under threat because of falling profits they make on selling fuel and now struggling because their car wash businesses, which were a good earner, are being decimated,” he added.

Same issue the music industry has. If your business model is failing then think of a new one. Don't try to lobby government to prop up a failing business model.

It's well known that the Brits wash their cars at home every Sunday.
It's nowhere near as common in the rest of Europe.

ill fight this crap to the death! ill keep washing my car by myself as i dont trust the auto ones. last time i went to one it ripped my rear wiper off! plus the damage those things do and thats not to mention the ****** down the "hand" wash that throw literally acid at the car to get rid of tar and grease.

rage mode

Sod card cleaning chemicals in the water supply, I'm more worried about hormones making their way into drinking water.

On the upside, I do have a fantastic pair of chebs these days.

I've never taken my car to an automated wash or even a hand wash and I don't intend to start. It's not the cost but the potential for damaging the paintwork.
