Alright mate, I completed a CRB recently and had to look into this as I was convicted and fined for taking a leak on a building society 10 years ago (By the way if any keyboard warriors feel the need to chastise me for it; you may as well climb down from your big tall horses now. I was drunk and only 17. I was very ashamed at the time, went to court, got the rollicking and paid the fine + expenses).
You should take a look at the rehabilitation of offenders act 1974
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/security/personnelsecurity/crc/rehabilitationofoffendersact1974
Basically, if your convction is considered 'spent' you need not claim it on your CRB form, if it hasn't yet been classed as spent, you are obliged to claim it.
I think the relevant statement for you is:
Sentence:
Fines (even if subsequently imprisoned for fine default), compensation, probation (for convictions on or after 3 February 1995), community service, combination, action plan, curfew, drug treatment and testing and reparation orders"
Rehabilitation period - Age 18 or over when convicted
5 years
Rehabilitation period - Age 17 or under when convicted
2 and half years
Unfortunately mate, I'm not sure whether your conviction (Theft (from a person, a dwelling, automatic machine or meter, from mail, by an employee, from shop, from or of a vehicle) - Section 1(1) Theft Act 1968) will disqualify you from whatever role it is you're looking for. This will probably be done on a case-by-case basis.
The best advice is to be honest about it, because if your conviction is not yet classed as 'spent' and they do the check and discover you haven't claimed it, you definitely won't get the job.
Best of luck
