Can somebody please help a technological idiot set up file & printer sharing between 2 PC's 
SET UP
Netgear wireless router (cable modem)
Desktop PC running Windows XP and connected to router via LAN cable
Laptop running Windows Vista connects to router via WIFI
Router has WEP key security and is configured to only allow specific MAC addresses to connect. Laptop allowed (& 2 other desktop PC's for kids allowed but not relevant to this).
No problems connecting to hub via wifi on the laptop as I can hook up to the internet without problem.
I'd like to enable file & printer sharing between the desktop & laptop to:
a) Use the printer attached to Desktop PC when using the laptop.
b) Be able to keep certain files synchronised between the desktop & laptop.
Can anybody give me an idiots guide how to do this please. I don't know if I need to create a separate network or somehow configure the residential gateway (Router) to allow this.
