Hi guys, ive got a problem with my system which I bought from ocuk.

My machines spec is as follows:

Shuttle XPC SD31P Aluminium Barebones System - Intel P4
Intel Pentium 4 805 Dual Core
Samsung SpinPoint P SP2504C 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM
Patriot Signature 1GB (2x512MB) PC5300 667MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit

The problem I have is that when I turn the pc on, it will sometimes boot to windows, then after a couple of mins the machine will just lock up, sometimes it reboots and freezes on the bios screen, and a few times it has comes up with the windows Stop 0x0000007A error

Whats weird is that, if I try to reboot it straight away it will just freeze on the bios screen, but if I unplug it, leave it for a few hours, then return it will allow me to get to window for a min or so, then go into this cycle again.

So far I have, run chkhd (all fine), reseated the ram (no problems). Formatted and reinstalled windows more times than I can count, run memtest (ran for 25hrs got ****** off and cancelled it to format again),

Also weird is the fact that ive installed windows so many times on a fresh hdd, sometimes it goes on, sometimes it doesn’t, but the times it does go on, it will install, then crash again with in 5mins or finalizing setup.

Id like to test the ram in a different machine, but I don’t have another one which takes the same type.

What voltage is your ram set to? If it is too low it could be causing you problems.

im not sure? i just put it all together and left the bios settings as standard, apart from changing the first boot device to the cd

thanks guys, i will try to up date the bios as soon as i get home.

i have tested the ram 1 stick at a time but it wouldnt boot unless they were both inserted.

on the shuttle site it says to make a bootable cd as i dont have a floppy drive

"if you would like to create a bootable CD to update/flash BIOS, please follow the steps in the following.

1. Create a bootable CD.

2. Copy all necessary files, such as flash utility and BIOS onto your HDD.

3. Finally, start up your system using a bootable CD and flash bios from HDD."

im ok with making a bootable cd, but on the shuttle website it only has the .bin file, and not the "flash utility" or do i not need this?

ive never done this before, so where it says, i need to copy the files to my hdd, then insert a bootable cd, then flash the bios, i dont really know how to do this.

yes i am a tard:p

After a bios update, they usually tell you to clear cmos and load setup defaults,i`d give that a go first.
If the system is new,its possible that your patriot ram isn`t compatible with the board, its not on the `tested` list here(but plenty do probs that isn`t)
http://global.shuttle.com/Support/SupportList.asp?Item=SD31P&ver=SD31P (FD31V1.x
I`d also check the patriot site for exact ram timings, see if bios is running them ok.Up the ram voltage a smidge if you can as hyper suggested.
The board should be able to boot with one stick of ram,the manual will probably tell you which slot to put it in (on my asus board its dimm3 not 1).
Check cpu temps,if possible reseat and paste, check again.
Unhook sata drive and try an old ide drive if you have one from an old machine, see if it installs xp.
Try a different psu.
If you have a mate with different memory give that a go first above all.Good luck.
