Tbh, £400 hotel budget can go a long way, why not take the euro star and stay over night in Paris?

yeah would recommend bath a pretty good destination for a weekend break. Took the GF last year and had a pretty good time. Its not cheap mind you, but if you look around you can get a good deal. The hotels right in the heart of town are expensive (no way near £400) but if your prepared to stay just outside its perfect and still walkable.

Pimping Maidstone as a possibility. Fremlins Walk is pretty good for shopping and Bluewater is 20 minutes away. Plus there's Leeds Castle etc nearby for touristy things.

I'd imagine Bath is better though

Yeah. The Mall at Cribbs Causeway.

My recommendation would be Bath and Bristol.
