They just aren't generally known as a potentially vicious or lethal breed.

Every kind of dog is potentially lethal. The point is regarding those with a propensity for aggression among the breed, which can't be denied.

Although I always state that its the owner not the dog that is at fault, and that is generally the case, my experience is that Dobermans can vary widely, just like other dogs of this type (working dogs). I work with mainly strays and the local home has a Doberman breeding/kennels attached so I work with them too.
Here is an description of the dog from a well known dog site:
Again, it comes down to the owners and how the dog is raised and whether the owner allows that protective nature!
Or just talk crap? If the dog was as wound up and aggressive as you made out I can tell you that the dog would have gone for you and not run away, and that comes from over 10 years of working with what people consider 'dangerous breeds' in a dogs home.

They are an amazing breed of dog very loyal and intelligent when raised correctly as said above, best friend of mine has just got a new doberman puppy think he had springs for legs! what a bundle of joys he is

Some dogs are dangerous, if this is dependent on owner (which it is not fully) then the owner should have the relevant licence to own the dog in question.
Any crime the dog commits the owner should be liable as if he did it himself.

Of course, that's probably just an indication that there are far more domestic Labradors than Dobermans.
Platinum 87 makes a valid point. The laws surrounding animals that are liable to be aggressive and dangerous ought to be pretty watertight in the sense that the owner should be responsible for the actions of their animals. There needs to be room for legal action else there is no disincentive for not raising the animal in a safe and proper way. Admittedly I'm not sure what the law is so this might be the case already?

It's pretty simple really: stop dick heads owning ANY dog ...... though how one polices that is a bit tricky.
Can't find any statistics on breed ownership levels but the Doberman is commonly listed as being one of the most popular breeds. So they do not appear to be disproportionately involved in maimings as compared to other breeds based on those statistics.
Those are only kennel club registered, working breeds like Dobermans are often not registered.
Regardless, those are the statistics.
My point is they aren't of any use if they are not representative. That's why I didn't use them.

Obviously labradors are more commonly owned than Dobermans energize. Your statistic about labs being involved in more maimings just shows there are more labs, not that there are more maimings per 000 animals or anything useful like that.
