please spec me a diesel £2000!

How many miles do you do a year? Do you NEED a diesel because most will be old and/or ropey for sub £2k. The best sub £2k Diesels are, unfortunately, French. £2k predates most decent diesels.

I'd be interested to know too. This 30 mile commute is killing me. So far i've thought about the 306 hdi and thats about it. I dont particularly care what its like as long as it can do 70mph and will outlive me

Are you sure its killing you, though?

Lets do some simple maths based on a 70mph 30 mile commute. We'll compare a cheap diesel at 50mpg and a not particularly economical petrol at, say, 34mpg.

Per month fuel costs based on 30 mile commute, 5 days a week:

Diesel: £50.12
Petrol (Your current car?): £70.50

So, selling your car and buying an old diesel will save you a staggering £20 a month. Or a quid a working day.

You probably spend more than that on coffee each day.

Just sold my 99T 108k mile Xsara HDi for £1300 tonight, plenty of leeway in your budget. Has a/c and didn't breakdown once in 2 years and 30,000 miles, 55+mpg. For £2000 it's going to be down to a particular example as much as the general reputation.

Hey,

I'd recommend a Fiat Punto JTD. Fantatic engine, if not, one of the best diesels around. I've got a Y reg with 60K on the clock. Picked it up for £2100. Great car and it has air-con. :) Car returns around 55-60mpg on the motorway and 40-45 in town. That's with decent fuel.

well after fox's first comment, i did realise i dont really do the mileage to bother about getting a diesel, looks like i was caught up in the hype. im now considering an audi a4 sport with the 20v turbo lump.

Why, considering the French made some of the best diesel engines of the 90's

Yes, and Ford use them today as per my above post. Its more the build quality. The engine will outlast the car by a thousand years probably.
