Hi, I am a bit out of touch with the current kit. The last machines I built were all based on the Abit NF7-S 2.0 motherboards all running overclocked mobile cpus with Corsair XMS 3500 memory. Hard drives run in Raid 0.

I have always been happy with AMD cpus so I thought that I would look at the current fastest offering as a place to start, in other words the FX62.
So I am looking for a set up that will really show up my mobile cpus as being slow.
I will need everything apart from the case and DVD drives.
So please spec me a system to be proud of with super quality bits.

Thanks ever so much, PeterT

I'm going to stop you here, and point you towards the Intel Core 2 Duo range.

The FX62 is a real waste of money, as you could get identical performance with an E6300, and a small amount of overclocking. The E6300 is around a third of the price.

Is there any kind of budget at all?

Thank you for your replies. Assume a bottomless pit to start with then I can start to be realistic and decide which bits I can afford.
As I kinda feel at home with AMD cpus which cpu will perform the same as the FX 62 with a bit of tuning up?
Which are the best current overclocking motherboards?
Do we still have to look for the good steppings? I started on this overclocking by buying a 1.0G Athlon AXIA and upping it to 1.4.
My best current mobile XP 2500 runs at 2600mhz on air.
I also prefer the ATI range of graphics card.

The E6300 can get to 3.2-3 ghz easily.

Same as the 4300.

The 8800GTS is the DX10 Card out.

Best card to get for the price.

I know what you are thinking but for the price of FX62 you can get so much more performance with a C2D E6600, which is still £80 cheaper!!

I'd go for the spec by melbourne720 and replace that HDD with a normal Seagate or WD and take away the case if you don't need it. Add in keyboard / Mouse / 19" widescreen of your choice and you have a very very good rig.

ATI have yet to realese the R600 next month so at the mo 8800 is the best card there is, I think it will be worth it to wait a month to see what ATI have to offer if you insist on ATI cards.

Out of the box, a Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz beats the FX62 at practically everything you throw at it, yet it is only ~£200.

An E4300 or E6300, when overclocked past around 2.5Ghz, will also beat the FX62 at practically everything that you throw at it.

The E4300 has a FSB of 800MHz, which when coupled with DDR2 PC6400 can reach very decent overclocks..an aftermarket CPU cooler would be even better too..this CPU only costs ~£110..

The Nvidia 8800GTS is a dx10 enabled card and can be bought for around £250 - £270 for ones based upon the referance model. The BFG 8800GTS listed is highly credited for it's lifetime warranty and 24/7 tech support. It is also around the same price as ATI's current best offering, the X1950X-TX, which it outperforms in almost all games..If you are wishing to buy an ATI graphica card, then I would wait about a month or so for their DX10 cards to be released...If not, the 8800GTS is the best "bang-for-buck" in the high-end range of graphics cards today..

Seeing that your building new & have (sort-of) unlimited funds for it, having any 'brand' loyalties is not such a good idea. It will deny you a killer system like this...
  • NEC AD7170A 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £17.20
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB ST3320620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM £56.99
  • BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £319.99
  • Asus P5N32-E SLi nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £129.99
  • Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK) £61.99
  • Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £173.99
  • GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) £124.99
  • Akasa Mirage 62 Aluminium Case - No PSU £83.99
  • Sub Total : £969.13
  • Shipping : £12.95
  • Vat : £171.86
  • Total : £1,153.94
Compare here against the FX62 :(

**shakes** if your wanting a new pc system go C2D, AMD have lost the plot! It would be insane to buy a new custom built AMD system, unless you are of course on a limited budget, then buy away! :D

I think a PSU more powerful than 520W might be needed??

I recommend one of these instead, it's a solid PSU for the price, I have one and it's very good quality.

OCZ GameXStream 700w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-019-OC

The Corsair is very good and should be able to deal with the suggested spec, the wattage ratings are not an indicator of quality as some would think, for instance my Antec Truepower only outputs 535watts at peak usage even though it has 550watt rating.

I know that the wattage rating does not mean that a PSU is good quality, There are PSU rated at 650W these days available for ~£15, but I do not know anyone who would buy one...I forgot to mention that the OCZ has a efficiency rating of 80% which is pretty good, but I was only suggesting a higher watt PSU because I thought the system that was listed might need it...but I also didn't want to degrade the quality of the product already listed ;D.

I am getting the message that AMD are not the way to go at the moment!
As I mentioned earlier, do you have to look for special steppings on the Intel cpus just like the AMD cpus?
