I've had a Win10 based Plex server for years which I'd like to upgrade to be able to stream 4K locally.

Current system is i3-2120 3.3Ghz chip with 8GB of ram. Don't have a huge collection so mine fits on a 4TB drive. This will probably soon fill up once I add 4K content.

My reason for asking for advice is really down to how far do I need to go for reliable 4K streaming?

Am I looking at i7 + 16GB ram and a GPU of some description for transcoding?

Also, should I put the OS on an SSD? The PC does nothing else but serve Plex.

You can stream 4k on just about anything if you're direct playing. Transcoding is what requires a good cpu or GPU and is what you want to avoid if possible.

Your current i3 will direct stream 4k no problems, if you need to transcode it would be way more efficient with a GPU that has a nvenc encoder.

SSD will help with plex as the library should load quicker.

Oh, I see.

For best results, I want the file to be directly played by the client, not to have to "transcoded" into a file the client can read. Is that the case?

The two TVs are Sony XF9005s. Also have a Shield tube in the bedroom and pro in the living room. Have these as the Sony TVs won't do iplayer, itv player without an ariel.
