See below the new Black Edition range from Plaxtor of there amasing PCI-E 2 x 2 M.2 Drives. The 512GB will be landing first and then the 128GB and 256GB versions are due in after that. Pricing has been confirmed and updated.

Ahhh, would love to have a decent m.2 by itself at a competitive price! Itching to get one...
 
am I missing something or are the figures for these not very impressive for the price compared to regularly SATA SSD's?

I picked up a 480 Revo Drive Max IOPS for about£350 a few years ago

specs for that are

Read: Up to 1025 MB/s
Write: Up to 950 MB/s
Max Random Write 4KB (Aligned): 140,000 IOPS

These drives look pretty poor in comparison?
 
Are we likely to see any better ssds ? I thought the idea of M.2 slot was to increase speeds? PCI ssds are faster ? Am I missing something?

Yes, you are ;-) M.2 is connector (shape) standard only, whilst PCIe is a bus type - which M.2 might use as well as SATA.
 
Who would really benefit from such a device and in which scenarios besides benchmarks does these PCI SSD's really proof their worth? Who are these aimed at?
 
This is a PCIe 2 x2 device...PCIe2 with 2 lanes which fits in M.2 Slot
It is a bit faster than a a SATA SSD.

Some M.2 Slots expose 2 lanes some 4..unfortunately the M.2 4 lane SSDs have not been introduced into retail channels yet. SM941 and their successor XP951 are being manufactured by SAMSUNG. These offer significantly faster speeds and lower latencies over latest gen SATA SSDs - XP951 is 2000MB/s read and 1500MB/s write are reported by review sites who have aquired from OEM Channel. Hopefully OCUK can persuade SAMSUNG to sell into their channel.

I am hopeful that PCI SSDs do offer real world benefits in lots of storage bottlenecked workloads...Boot times, application load times, sleep resume, Media Servers with 100GB of metadata and multiple clients, Scratchdisks for Photoshop to name a few.

Maybe Samsung/manufacturers are waiting for lower process node capacity to reduce reported heat problems before introducing to a less controlled end user environment. Maybe they want to sell old stock first...
 
Yeah but with M2 it is compact fits on the board out of the way but this one takes up a pcie slot and losses warrenty if you remove it from the board.

that's probably the one to wait for, unless you have a nice GPU cooler running next to the mounting point.... these get HOT - hence the bigass heatsink on the board mounted variety.
The M7e's are rumoured to be using a different controller that doesn't get so toasty

they are as quick as advertised, the increase ovre SATAIII is not as dramatic as some figures you see bandied around, and that is because of the PCIe Gen 2 x2 speeds of the current drives, when they get 4 lanes (x4 speed) and Gen 3 PCIe - that'll be when we see the increases promised and the full potential of this new format, without the need for fancy caching drivers
 
One thing i do find very strange, is their release schedule, why the hell release these adapter bundled ones first, when we are all buying new boards with m.2 sockets.

Is there going to be any difference in them ? hence why the warranty void if removed ?

anyone know the expected date on the bare versions ?
 
I am still waiting on the dates for the bare versions. These are PCi-e 2x2 versions so the speeds will be higher than standard SATA 3 connections and standard SSD's. The PCI-e 4x4 lane SSD's will be a lot quicker. These will be released around the end of march April sort of time. They might be delayed.

These are bare drives are handy for small form factor situations where you dont want to have to locate a 2.5" drive somewhere with power and sata cable running to it. For most people a standard SSD will be cheaper and perform a better bang for buck.

For people who dont have a M.2 socket which is a lot of people these are a great solution for people to upgrade and get a fast SSD. again no need to find space for a 2.5" ssd and run power and sata cable to it.
