Plug sockets - is this safe?

Yeah never plug an extension into another extension. Although I do remember my first job at Currys some idiots had a chain of about 4-5 extension leads to power on all the TV's.

I have a 4-way extension plugged into a 2-way one. Has been for the last 10 years and never had a problem.

As already posted, my house too doesn't have many sockets.

Why are you not just using GNS3 if it's for a lab?
I've been looking at it this evening actually, considering I already have 2 switches, how they connect to GNS3. Without buying ethernet to usb adaptors or network cards it doesn't seem like I will be able to. Need to look what you can do with the built in "switches".

Plus I like the thought of having a lab ;) which can hopefuly get bigger as I progress.

Just add switchport modules to the GNS3 emulated devices. You do lose some functionality such as no rapid-pvst, dot1x and a few other bits but it's good enough IMO. Also IIRC you have to use old style vlan database config context for some stuff but it shouldn't be a problem.

Seriously, I work with guys who have done their CCIE study with GNS3.
