Hi,
I've just got my letters back about my accomodation at the university. It breaks down to be that my room is £84 a week.

This means that the first payment they are going to take it for £1428 for the first term. This seems like a hell of a lot to me? Surely this is going to leave me with naff all money as I have to pay this out of my loan?

Welcome to being a student. Make sure you have your interest free overdraft set up, possibly get a credit card, and if your parents visit get them to take you shopping and buy loads of tinned/dried food that'll last ages.

It's the same for everyone, they are taken by term. the last one is the smallest one.

Oof, that is a helluva lot more than I paid in Uni halls at Coventry. Which hall are you in? Just looking at the Plymouth website and they do have some seriously expensive options....

Yeh It's an en-suite room! lol. I was just a little confused as most of my mates tell me they paid £900 a term kinda area. Maybe I was a little over the top earlier, I can afford it no problem I was just gutted that I had to spend that much more lol

£84 a week better be a ensuite room :p

But it's normal these days, just got to get a PT job thats all.

Thats normal?

Good God....are students studying in the South such precious little beggars that they want to pay well over the odds for accomodation just to have ensuite facilities?

I thought one of the major points of Uni life was the "communal living" thing.....

***edit***

Apparently so....glad you can afford it matey, I certainly couldn't have.

I paid £73 and £61 in my last 2 places, the £73 one was in Brighton and it's gone up by now, probably to around £80 odd. So i guess £83 in a city uni won't be that out of ths world.

I paid 107 in London. None of this en-suite nonsense either :)

Think I paid £65 for catered in 1st and second years, £50 self-catered in my third, and then a group of us last year got together in a 6 bedroom house for £55 a week rent. Perfectly comfortable, didn't lack anything at all that we could have used/not easily gone without.

How must would you consider to have spent each week in food and living costs? Don't include going out getting drunk etc...

Depends. How close to a proper market are you? I tended to shop at Coventry market for most of my stuff, as it was a helluva lot cheaper and a helluva lot better than shopping at supermarkets until I moved out of the city centre.

Which band are you? Sounds about right for an ensuite room - iirc ensuite in Pilgrim was £90 (I'm somewhere in Pilgrim) so if you have an ensuite you got a good deal :)

Gilwell is the cheapest - starting around £60 iirc - but it's older and that's for an 'interior room' o.o :s

Either way you got a cheaper room than me (no I'm not telling you where I am, I like my privacy) :)

£90 a week at soton for a nice ensuite. They take a third of the FEES in one go, just after student loan comes in.
