Hi all,

As some of you may remember, my dad purchased a 94' R129 500SL a few years back. His current circumstances are that he lives in Spain so would be buying a LHD car, either from Spain, or may travel further afield to France/Germany to get the right car (He got his 500SL from Germany and drove it to Spain from pick-up).
He's now thinking of replacing the car in the next few months but isn't sure what he'd like next.

Criteria is:
Budget of up to €20,000 (about £12,000).
Said today ideally would like a car that depreciates heavily in the first 5 years and he'd purchase it after that "new" period (ie 5 years old+ but anything up to 15 years old)
Must be 200bhp+ or close - nothing supercar fast but must be quick.
Handling is fairly unimportant (he never pushes it round corners) - much more important is comfort - be it interior and/or ride quality.
Must have 4 proper seats (larger 2+2s would be considered)
Convertible is a plus but not required.
Insurance/running costs are unimportant.

Just to give you an idea of what cars he's been considering:
- Golf R32
- Audi S3
- Mercedes CLK320
- wildcard being a VW Touareg
... Cant think of any more.

So I'll leave it in the capable hands of the OcUK Motor's team to see what you guys can suggest :D

Thanks!

Had another chat when suggesting the 3-series and he wants something a bit more "shopable" (as he's scared of taking the Merc down the shops) but something a bit quirky (ie not a 3-series as they're quite common).

I was shocked when he was considering a Nissan Skyline so even boy-racer cars are being considered!

Is there any pleasing this man?!

Good point, if you cant park a 13 year old Merc without worrying then spending £12k on something else won't help.

Something like a Golf/S3 would definately NOT get as noticed as an 500SL with AMG alloys etc...

I dont think he's truely made up his mind on what he wants yet but any suggestions are greatly received - The megane suggestion isn't bad - haven't thought of that.

Yes it would, Golf R32 is hardly subtle, especialy in that lovely blue. Most people wouldnt look twice at an old Merc and would be far more interested in the R32.

R32 is a performance hatch, it's not a comfy wafty cruiser. It handles, not cossets.

Sorry but I disagree...

I know which 90% of people (ie non-motors people) would notice first...

Granted that it doesnt exactly meet his criteria I've put above.

The previous shape 500SL was/is a very good car and is supposed to handle quite well for its size. Drove one a while ago and it was great in both performance and handling. Obviously a different car to the golf, but I dont get why someone would notice a bodykitted Golf over a big Merc convertible

If comfort is what he wants, I'd recommend staying away from cars with lowered/stiffened suspension and big wheels.

Most comfortable car I've been in to date was a Mercedes S-class or a Jaguar S-type. Then again, these might be too attention attracting for your liking.

The suggestion of the 530i is a good one - and in the continent, I would imagine that they're plentiful. Also worth considering is the 530d.

Exactly. The golf.

You're honestly saying that you believe that driving down a main road or parked in a supermarket carpark, you'd expect more people to notice the Golf over the SL?!

Probably like most people, I would just think it's an old merc .

YES!

Have you seen an R32 Golf? Huge alloys, big flared arches and looks gorgeous in the blue. You cant mistake an R32 for just being another golf. Had you said Clio 182 Vs Clio then id agree, but not a Golf R32.

To me a merc is a merc, im the same with BMWs. To me they are just another car on the road they are that common and i would walk past the merc, but the last R32 i walked past i had the camera out for pics.
