He said from 17, though. Anyone with that license is going to be what, 30 at the youngest?

Well, yes, I was referring to the age limits as a general rule as opposed to anyone that age now....

Well Kevin is dead so i doubt he cares.

He may not care but I personally wouldn't drive that car in the East of Glasgow as his pals do care...

Upto 3.5 tonne 17, and normal car license.
18 For upto 7.5 tonne + Class 1 license. (17 in armed forces)
21 For over 7.5 tonne.
You could also get it registered as a motorhome, then things are a little different again.

Edit: Also, any licence holders that passed their test after 01/01/1997 CANNOT tow a trailer behind any vehicle until they have passed another test...

Yes they can as long as it's under the 750KG or something....

Under 'Category B' which is the standard license you will have received if you passed after 01/01/1997:

Cars or light vans, with or without trailers

The term maximum authorised mass (MAM) means the total weight of the vehicle plus the maximum load it can carry safely.

B
Motor vehicles with a MAM of up to 3,500 kg, no more than eight passenger seats, with or without a trailer - weighing no more than 750 kg

B
As category B but with a trailer weighing more than 750 kg. The total weight of the vehicle and the trailer together can’t weigh more than 3,500 kg. The weight of the trailer, when fully loaded, can’t weigh more than the unladen weight of the vehicle

AFAIK, you need a Class 2 (LGV C) to drive a tractor unit, 5th wheel or not. - A Tractor unit is a short wheelbase Class 2 (C) vehicle anyway! - I can't recall if you have to cover the 5th wheel or not. That said, I regularly used to drive tractor units prior to gaining my Class1 (C+E) both on the road and on private ground with no issues from Vosa - I worked a a company that was 2 miles from the local Vosa HGV testing centre and regularly used to take units there for test.

It is exempt from the European drivers hours regs if it has no 5th wheel and is not used for hire or reward.

I will check later, alas, I haved to take my tractor & trailer to Liverpool Docks now, oh joy! :(

My dad was pretty high up in the fire brigade and he could have pretty much any car he wanted as long as it had a hard roof (and he could afford the monthly payments) which would then have had a siren built in and a light that you plug into the cigarette lighter.

He had a BMW 3 series and then a Jag X-Type even though i kept on saying get something quick :)

Yeah, apologies. I didn't realise it was a weight restriction as opposed to trailers as a whole.

And as mentioned, you do in fact need a C1 to drive a tractor unit with the 5th wheel disabled/removed and not just a car licence. Its more to do with the weight as opposed to anything else as it is no longer classed as a goods carrying vehicle if the 5th wheel is disabled/removed.

My mistake came from me being an older fart and passing my test pre-1997 therefore having all these entitlements as standard without passing further tests....

This has overtaken me before where i live

That's the same Evo I mentioned below -

Got undercut once by cops in a Mitsubishi Evo

No blues - think they must have just got it - The (nice policeman) came off a slip road to the left and just booted it up the inside of us all as traffic made way for oncoming traffic

Also seen a Lotus years ago.

Aston Martin seems OTT

But if these cars are confiscated as proceeds of crime - surely the cops should get them and use them

Can someone who passed their car licence POST 1997 list the categories they have on their licence for my info please (dont include motorbike, Artics etc, just what you have as a normal car driver)

I passed my test before 1997 and have the following:

B - Car (Motor vehicle other than those in category A, with a MAM of up to 3,500 kg and with no more than eight passenger seats)

C1 - Medium Vehicles (Medium sized vehicle weighing between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg)

D1 - Buses (Bus with a minimum of 9 and a maximum of 16 passenger seats)

B+E - As B but with a trailer where total weight of vehicle and trailer is less or equal to 8.25 tonnes

C1+E - As C1 but with a trailer where total weight of vehicle and trailer is less or equal to 8.25 tonnes

D1+E - As D1 but with a trailer over 750kg

F - Agricultural Tractors

K - Mowing Machine/Pedestrian Controlled Vehicles

L - Electrically Propelled Vehicles

N - Duty Exempt Vehicles

P - Mopeds (although this is moot as they brought in CBT as a requirement since)

a lot of officers at ACPO level (assistant chief constable and above) have unmarked company cars which often have blue lights and radios fitted.
whats to stop them contributing 100 / 200 pound per month ontop of whatever is usually spent on a company car so that they get something extra nice?

Our Cheif drives a Plain Range Rover Sport with Blues etc. As well as a V70 T5.

Most of the managers have 3 and 520Ds/Octy VRS and we also have a marked up BMW X1 for our Incident Support Officers.
