Police raid house because of electric heater.

our house got raided.. :) "suspecting stolen laptops/mobiles phones and so on.." found absolutely nothing.. not a single criminal charge at anyone in the family too... surprise doh.

Although there was enough evidence for a Magistrate to authorise the warrant.

I read a while ago that police would be able to find canabbis farms in this way and thought it was a good idea but if they cant tell between a leccy heater from B&Q then what good is it. Certainly not accurate enough to get warrant?

So? Cannabis is in no way a dangerous drug and enforcing laws against it is a complete waste of money

I'm all for legalising it.

But while it remains illegal the police have a duty to enforce the law.

I do believe it's harmful just now as well. There's the psychological dangers from long term use.

Additionally I suspect it's a gateway drug. Many people smoke hash and think "Well that was tame. The law has got it wrong". Finally since it's probably a huge percentage of drug dealers business, it'd do well to take it out of that completely.

But while it's illegal the police do not have the option to say "Well, nah, I don't agree with that law, so you know we'll just forget it".

As the law stands your point is irrelevant.
Doesn't matter what the law says, the police have a finite amount of resources and need to concentrate it on the serious crimes and issues
Those 6 officers could have been solving a real crime instead of wasting time raiding a garage.

That simply isn't true.
That simply is true, and we established it in the last cannabis thread that it is safer than both cigarettes and alcohol, both of which are legal.

We were debating relative dangers, both tobacco and alcohol are dangerous. There is clear evidence that cannabis can cause mental issues in some people. Therefore it is dangerous. Therefore you are wrong.

It's also dangerous because it's illegal, and PC Plod will bash your head in! (Ok I'm trolling now).

Seriously though I think it's utterly futile to argue with Rypt over this.

I disagree, this raid acts as a deterant, it shows the police are working in the area, and besides, cannabis might not be as bad as its portrayed to be (I don't care for that) but the people growing it and selling it -hardly up standing citizens are they? I don't think they're the kind of people who would say pay their TV license, council tax, car insurance etc

Hardly took 6 officers long to do does it? They'll already be doing the next one by now!

The chances are the 6 Officer would not have been pulled from front line duties anyway, they possibly would have been officers from the search team or another specialist unit.

They use helicopters and fly over houses using a camera which picks up heat signatures from houses. IMO they should have sent dogs just to sniff outside the house just to be sure.

Do they have dogs that can sniff out cannabis plants from outside the shed? Isn't it easier just to break into the shed and see? There won't be much damage, just a shed door/frame and a lock. I'd imagine a couple of hundred quid or so and an apology to the house owner.

Not to mention a lot of canabis farms are using dodgy bypasses on the leccy meter, and potentially very unsafe wiring and illegal immigrants in many cases where it's part of an organised effort.

it tells everyone with a canabis farm they need to unsulate their roof properly to ensure their canabis farm is not detected

I don't think so, if they are growing that much and aren't smart enough to realise that the heat from all their lamps rises by now, after all the times this has been in the papers etc, they've got it coming to them!

There is a massive issue with the rental market though too, paying the electic bill isn't a concern for the Cannabis growers. :D
