Watching Traffic Cops at the moment and the episode is about the Police powers to scrap cars belonging to uninsured drivers.

Right on I say. If you choose to not drive legally, expect to lose your car.

They should have been doing this for years.

Yeah loads of places do this now.. was towing a celica shell about 5 miles to get rid.. but i wasnt insured on it.. got stopped lol.. they let me off and i arranged for it to be picked up on a low loader.. one of the reasons they let me off.. was cause they would have to scrap it and they said the pick up guy wouldnt be happy taking that away lol.. i said please do as its what im trying to do. laughter was had

they actually gave me a nod and wink to keep going but they wernt allowed to say it.. but i thought better of it....

But yeah.. can only be a good thing :D

traffic cop programme on TC now

Just flicked over to this trash to find that cops are now crushing or fining people uninsured cars... fair enough.

Queue an white VW Scirroco getting pulled over by these 2 cops. Apparantly the car isn't insured. The driver gets out, turns out he's a mechanic who's just done the MOT for this car and the mech has his own insurance. The cops get the mech to call the owner and hands the phone over to smug cop #1. He then proceeds to warn the owner that if he had been driving then he would be fined, have his car crushed and he would have 8 points on his license.

But he wasn't driving! This really ****** me off . There was a reason why this guy had no insurance, he was in the process of getting it back on the road! Why would he buy insurance for a car that he isn't driving and as far as he knew, hadn't yet passed the MOT?!

I think they should sell them at auction instead. This way they can make, dare I say, millions of much needed pounds to spend on improving this countries roads and police forces patrolling it.

Becuase the law says you have to have insurance for any vehicle on the public highway?

All he said was if you'd have been driving it, you'd be in trouble, which is true..

The cop was treating as if he had done something wrong. Instead he was wasting the guys time for no reason with a smug "you got lucky kid" attitude.

Just seen it as well, it is a good idea, but would be improved if they were allowed to sell them, even as little as £50-100 per car would be a decent income for not really doing a huge amount....

Hurray!
About time I say. Been too long coming.
Still I bet you wont see your insurance premium come down any time soon after the rise after rise due to uninsured hit and runners etc over the last few years ...

Just an option, but perhaps they could leave the uninsured driver in the car whilst they crush it. Nothing annoys be more than paying a higher premium because of such people, and I would no doubt end up coughing up even more if one of them was to drive into me.

See, i can't stand people with your attitude. I would rather the police take 5 minutes out of someones day, just to check if he has insurance, than someone without any insurance crash into me and me have to pay out just because the police had bothered to follow up on a suspect driver.

I guess the reason they scrap the cars rather than sell them is that it would probably make for poor headlines if it was announced that the police were taking peoples cars, selling them and keeping the cash, no matter how much the owner deserved it.

I guess selling them would involve more admin and stuff aswell whcih costs money. And most of the cars they seieze tend to be junk thats not worth much.

Good idea but a little pointless, you can buy cars for as little as £50 so why would it upset them? They are saving many times that by not having insurance.

That's a personal insult that's not called for, here's why..

The chap that was driving DID have insurance, trade policies allow people to drive any car. The policeman didn't have to then phone up the registered keeper and talk to him like a muppet.

I've done exactly the same thing when I used to have an old shed as a car, and no money to insure/tax/MOT it. I left the car off of the road for a few months, then, when I had the money, got the car put through the MOT. It wasn't worth me insuring the car until I knew it had passed it's MOT without too much to be spent else I would have just got the local scappy to pick it up to be crushed. If the car passed then I would get the insurance then tax for the car.

Totally 100% legal then, and still 100% legal now!

Hmm, I think there may be a little more to this that was seen on the TV programme.
Hypothetical example - I Own a vehicle thats taxed/MOTd but uninsured by me. My father comes along and needs to use the car, he drive the vehicle using the DOC part of his own insurance.
Now as far as Plod is concerned, the vehicle would be registered and having no insurance against the registration.
I guess in this situation, Plod would not remove the vehicle, and apologise for any inconvenience caused?

Fairly sure that for DOC cover to be valid, the car must already be covered by someone elses insurance policy as a precaution to stop peoeple absuing the system (by for instance insuring a cheap car fully comp and getting a DOC extension, then driving a 2nd higher insurance group car which isn't insured anywhere else under the DOC cover). Of course, this could all just be "pub talk".
