iv got a number of email accounts with 1and1, which use pop/smtp servers on default port numbers. These work fine going through a bt braodband connection, and NTL connection, but if the computer is connected through wannadoo, it wont send (it will receive though).
The email server is set as pop/smtp.1and1.co.uk, with no mention of any wannadoo servers, but its the wannadoo mail server replying that an error has occured.
could this be down to wannadoo setting that anything on the pop/smtp port is automatically sent to there email server? and therefore is not reaching the 1and1 servers?

That is a VERY weird thing for Wanadoo to do. Trust the French to be odd.

So you are saying that any attempt to address the SMTP port on any address will be substituted with smtp.wanadoo.co.uk? Even if one was to use the IP Address of the smtp server instead of a domain name?

This is the first ISP I have heard of who does this, and I can't really understand the logic behind it. Bizarre....

Maybe they think is an anti spam measure by preventing direct SMTP connections from their network.

What's the error you get, maybe it's complaining about the From or Reply To e-mail addresses?

Yup.

Tui's hit the nail on the head. Anti-spam measure.

More like an anti-social measure. This stops their customers from registering domains with any third party. I am sitting here with a mail client that checks email from five different mail servers from five different companies. Most of these being domains I have registered for my business which I run from home.

Well... it's not as if I'd ever recommend Wanadoo... but you may of saved me some troubleshooting time in future. :)

Are they many/any other ISPs who do this? Normally anti-spamming measures involve making the user validate mail by logging into the SMTP server before sending. I have never heard of this kind of blanket measure.

ISPs should as a matter of course only allow their networks to relay through their mail servers. Wannadoo apparently want to force any outgoing SMTP through their servers.

You posted that you could still receive e-mail, so POP3 isn't affected, just SMTP?

As a matter of interest, what was the error you got? There could be a work around.

Tui - I ain't getting any errors. You need to direct your questions at Mike. :) He is the one with the original problem. I am only in this thread due to surprise at the restrictions Wanadoo are putting in place. This is breaking the rules of TCP/IP with the agressive filtering. It means that anyone who wanted to run their own mail servers for business reasons could not then have a Wanadoo account at home as they could not check their mail.

It is not only spammers who need mail servers. Anyone who is working with their own company will have their own domain and therefore their own mail servers. :)

im not on the site with the wanadoo connection for some time now, but i think the error i get is that the smtp server failed to respond, but it says the address of the wanadoo server, even though ive put in the address for the 1and1 server.
and yes i can receive email from all of my accounts, which consists of various 1and1 accounts, a wannadoo account, and a bt account.

A suggestion that may help with the 1and1 account. Try setting it up as follows:

Outgoing Mail Server: auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk
Authentication required: Yes
SMTP Port: 587

I use these settings with one of my customers who is on BT Broadband. If they work with your 1and1 account, then the change of port number may be enough to fool Wanadoo. Worth a try :)
