Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

Ok could people humour me please.

*If* I was to get a 996 - 2000/2001 model, what would you recommend?

How do they do with regards to mileage? Is there anything to look out for?

Also why is it cheaper to insure a 996 Carrera than a Focus ST or BMW Z4? Because drivers crash less and take better care with security etc?

Yes and running a 996 cost several times more no doubt, servicing, maintenance and parts are more expensive.

Thank you for that. Was looking at 3.4 but would consider the 3.6S model. Nearly bought one last week based purely on looks! No research - no nothing! lol

I'll bear that in mind - IMS Bearings - are they the ones in the gearbox? I've seen one highlight that he'd uprated the bearing.

What about tyres? About £800 a set is a rough estimate? I've seen £1400+ quoted but when I look on blackcircles or something it's much cheaper.

I was surprised to see a standard Carrera is narrower than my Ford Focus. Is that right? I was worried about fitting one in my garage as Focus is fine but no chance with a Monaro!

They are small cars, why they are such a good drive as they can fit down narrow lanes, something that is getting harder to do as modern cars get larger.

Cheers for the heads up - interesting it's the 3.4 that's got a tougher seal than the 3.6. Does the 3.6 997 have the problem still and the 3.8S version is ok?

What's considered a mk1?

IMS failure on 2006 model and newer 997's is very rare as Porsche updated the IMS.

Bore scoring was an issue on all engines until gen2 997's.

Have been told my neighbour is getting a new Mustang GT. Seems to think it will be one of the first RHD cars to be shipped over. I guess just wait and see. Anyone know when they actually arrive at UK dealers?

Porsche thread.......
Maybe post in the Mustang thread ;)

All cars are pre-sold, anyone buying now late 2016 delivery.
First RHD cars for customers expected to start arriving December onwards.

Is such a different car from my C2S, its just so tight, the grip from the 4WD system is amazing. This is what a normal C2S should feel like.

I was planning to buy a 458 at the end of the winter but I think I will give it a miss and find a high spec GTS

Surprisingly this is what most of the journalist said he drove the 991 C4S, somehow it felt more tight and more RWD inspired than the actual C2S and better steering feel.

Porsche obviously did something with the 991 C4S as I have heard this so much now where people who have driven both and journalist all say the C4S feels the better drivers car and of course has the bonus of all weather grip.

I was have silly ideas yesterday of keeping my 911, was loving driving it so much and owning it, M3 and Mustang.

Stupid idea, so stupid!!

Best to sell it and maybe in a few years re-visit Porsche and look at a 991 C4S/GTS I think. :)

If I was you I would move on the 997.1 and upgrade to a 997.2 If you manage to get £30k for yours its probably only going to cost you £10k to upgrade maybe even less if you don't want a PDK.

I do love mine, it is so unique and no offence the newer 911's went a bit digital, I've got the last of the great analogues. But that is my heart talking.

Brain says as you move it on. See how I get along with Mustang and if I don't gel or in a couple of years I want a change again then 997.2 GTS RWD or a 991 GTS 4WD will be firm favourites for sure.

As much as I like Cayman GT4, it is still not a 911 and on the road a 911 GTS is pretty much perfect. I'd want PDK Sports Plus for sure, must be effect of getting older or maybe just because latest PDK with correct options are so damn good. :)

So a question I see asked a lot 2 or 4 GTS?

However, the more I read the more I see people recommending the 4 over the 2 which seems odd. In your option whats the differences between the 2 and 4?

997.2 then the RWD version.
991 then the 4WD version.

Is that in terms of feel / driving dynamics or is there more to it than that?

On the 991 it makes no sense but the 4WD has better steering feel, seems to drive more like a RWD car even though it is 4WD and then has the advantage of being 4WD. On the 911 Porsche did something very good on the 4WD cars, or they got the 2WD wrong, lol. :D

I would jump at the opportunity to buy yours if it wasn't speed yellow.

You had the 3rd radiator added didn't you? From what I've read this seems to be vital in providing the extra cooling to prevent possible bore scoring.

Correct is why it was first thing I did when buying car.

SY is marmite, either love or hate, but is incredibly rare so helps mine with value for re-sale.

I think NO AGENCIES, NO TEST PILOTS & NO SCAMMERS! is pointless as any of those won't get to the end of the advert before they call you. I had so many idiots trying to steal my GT3, some well known dealers treating me like an idiot offering 10K less than I got.

Yeah trust me it is very tempting to take it to the specialist garage that offered me 27-28k for it cash to not have the risk of dealing with idiots, thieves and dodgy dealers.

What will replace the 911?

New Mustang, its both a good and bad idea.

Change a Porsche for a Ford, a bad idea, the build and quality of the 911 amazes me compared to the BMW it makes the BMW feel French. :D

But at the same time for similar money I get a brand new car, more toys, more power, V8 and a warranty with absolutely huge tuning ability (1000BHP).
