Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

Does the tuning company match the manufacturer warranty?

If I tune no warranty of course. ;)
But I won't touch the engine at first, just some slight cosmetic changes. :)

When I do tune, warranty gone and I will, I'd be very unlucky to get an engine issue and if it explodes, I buy a new engine but I will be running a conservative setup of around 750 horses, yes conservative. :)

Madness, frankly. Boils my **** this sort of thing, becoming a pure flippers market and many people are having to go without. Gone are the days of walking into an OPC, building your car, paying a deposit and awaiting delivery. The GT cars were always special, always in demand. Today however you feel you are doing well if a sales person doesn't laugh in your face, look you up and down, tut and walk away shaking their head chuntering 'chav' under their breath. Now you need to know funny handshakes, keep begging at their door and kiss the ass of every salesperson from end to end of the UK in the hope they might give you the time of day and consider you for purchase. Puts me off the company hugely.

Completely agree!
Porsche Wilmslow have a GT4 in their showroom right now, £104,000.
They also have a 997.2 GT3 RS, 100k over new asking price.

Insane! Build to demand simples, stop making it impossible for people to buy these great cars.

Porsche keep this up I know it is unlikely but companies like Lotus, McClaren could start to win business from Porsche and Lotus are starting to release what look like some really nice cars, a bit overpriced in my view but at 100k+ a GT4 is vastly over-priced, I'd rather just buy a second hand Ferrari, Maserati, a proper super-car. :)

As fox said, its cost the owner a fortune to keep it running and a new engine is not £6k so its probably had is fix or something.

I had a Gen 1 997 in the now year I owned the car it had no end of little things go wrong, finally it needed a new engine at the cost of £17k. Lucky I had a warranty.

If you have a £15 to £20k budget and you really want to be in a Porsche a high milage Gen 2 Cayman is the way to go, rock solid engine and greenly more reliable. You may even find one with a warranty.

To be honest, now I know what to look for on a gen1 911 / Cayman / Boxster I would not be worried about buying one. :)

Apart from the regular stuff you should check/listen for on any car with a gen 1 997/987 most important stuff is to make sure it is ideally a 2006 built model (upgraded IMS), check the engine for scoring and ideally make sure its being a daily driven car. These cars want to be used, not a garage queen or stuck in traffic never exceeding 30mph.

Yes a gen2 has the more reliable engine, no IMS issues or scoring issues, but IMS is very rare and though scoring can and will effect all cars it can certainly be limited and nearly prevented with improved cooling and good maintenance.

HI Andy

Looks a lovely car, with some great options but also some not so great.

Really was not a drivers spec car that, as per your comment the Power Steering Plus is woeful, it is like the city button found in Fiats, with the exception you cannot turn it off, so it reduces feel and makes steering to light, vastly reducing confidence in the car. Terrible option!

PDCC also tends to reduce feel and feedback from the car, but does improve ability and quicker laptimes, but for a road car probably best not to have it to make the drive more fun.

Drive the 4WD GTS, without the PS Plus and without PDCC if possible (might be default on GTS) or just find a regular 991 C4S without those options and with ceramics, PSE, PDK Plus and I think you will find its a totally different and much better car to drive.

Also a wild card, drive a 997.2 RWD GTS, those were proper drivers cars and a true alternative to a GT3. :)

I'd have thought money chucked at car meant it was looked after as every bill paid for rather than zero spent which instead of reliable to me would mean the owner is selling a knacker.

I'm under no illusion these things are expensive - I'd expect nothing less. The idea of a £6k engine lost me a bit as I was thinking 'it can't be the same as an RX-7 engine and be that cheap surely!?'.

Noted lol.

Thank you for confirming - £17k that is more like it! Thinking a 997 will be too much for a decent example but a nice 996 is achievable with sub 100k miles. I prefer the look of the headlights on the 997 however overall care is a greater priority and the IMS and bore scoring issues i'll be looking out for. I'll also be getting PPPI done as these seem good value considering the depth they go into. If I buy from a dealer some offer really good warrantees too. The cayman looks ok but I dunno... It's not a 911. I'll never be able to do this ever again so I'd like to go for it.

17k is the figure from Porsche, fitted by Porsche.

You can get a 997/987 with future proofing from Hartech so it won't score the bores or have IMS failure for £8000-£12000 and 1-2k in labour.

I'd go the Hartech route everything as the engines from Porsche could still fail, the Hartech one won't fail. :)

Hi there

New 911, looks great, looks incredibly capable, hugely tuneable no doubt for those who care not about warranty, but who knows maybe Porsche will offer power packs also.

But I've said it 100 times, for me the focal point of pretty much any car I own is the engine and whether some agree with me or not I simply find turbo charged engines boring and dull. Yes the first 5 minutes is exciting, wooo boooost. Then comes the lack of noise, character, linear power curve, high rpm, high revving, did I say noise?

Having owned numerous turbo powered cars and driven some of the new stuff, yes they have improved, but sorry after owning cars with incredible NA engines, S2000, M3, 911 C2S, Mustang a turbo charged motor is still severely lacking, it is not all about performance and numbers. If it was I'd simply buy a GTR it is still pretty much the fast car on road and track.

Looks amazing, but Porsche should have also really given it the powerpack, another 20-30BHP would make quite a difference in something so lightweight. :)

To all Porsche Experts

At the end of April 16 my M135i PCP is up, i will purchase and then sell privately to release some value. At the moment i have a deposit down on an BMW M2 however i think i am going to cancel. I am considering an M3/4 however even with decent finance and some attractive discounts there is no hiding that you are going to lose a large chunk of money over 3 years.

So this brings me onto a possible opportunity. My dad has owned since nearly new a 05 997 911 C2S which has has roughly 47k on the clock and recently it has had the following works:

Replacement clutch
Front & rear bumper respray
4x new Pzero tyres
Front/rear discs and pads
New ECU due to airbag fault
Service & mot

He wants to sell as no longer uses the car. I'm thinking that this could be a great car to own for 12 to 18 months before moving on for something newer and more sensible, sure it will cost a bit more in fuel and I'm sure some repairs but hopefully nowhere near the figures when buying a new M3/4. My only real concern with the car is that the engine is a weak point and obviously this would be disastrous. Is there a way to have the car checked for the two main engine issues?

Appreciate any advice really, I drove the car to the Nurburgring this year and it was absolutely fantastic.

Thanks

Sam

Being an old car is probably has the weaker IMS but with 47k on the clock your out of the danger zone so to speak as an IMS that is going to let go tends to happen at lower mileages. So don't worry about that, or you could look at upgrade IMS options as I think on the earlier cars you could upgrade the IMS, but in all honesty I'd not bother, IMS failure is incredibly rare.

What effects them most is bore scoring, at 47k miles it will no doubt have some slight scoring unless your father has changed oil far more regular than Porsche recommends and he has used decent fuel. A boroscope test can be done for around £100 at any Porsche specialist and will tell you the state of the bores. :)

Also a good decision, though I own a BMW nothing is really a better drivers car on the road that you can use daily than a Porsche and a C2S is one of the best choices only really beaten by the GTS on the road. :)

I'll just leave this here...:(:(

I'm keeping my flat 6 :cool::D

Sorry but like other here this sounds absolutely tosh. Might as well just buy a Focus RS, will no doubt handle as well and be quicker with a far lower price tag.

For me 4 cylinder FI is not as good as flat 6 NA, for several reasons, noise, throttle response being the first two and anyone who has driven a turbocharged 4 cylinder and then a large capacity V6/Flat 6 NA will know exactly what I mean.

should have held onto my 911 for another year maybe would be worth even more.

But hey this is why I have gone for a Mustang, a modern car where the manufacturer is giving a big middle finger to Europe with a great big 5.0l dirty V8 that loves to rev. :D

Hmmm its not a glowing review, she is hawt though. :D

Ironically it looks like ill have a 991.2 demo car after xmas to see if that can temped me away from the GTS. So ill do a mini review and my thoughts about it then.

Even though I am a bit annoyed you can't order buckets for one yet even though ive seen demo cars with buckets in them.

Same all the new Porsche's are going:
More grip
Better handling
Nicer interior
Beter economy and lower emissions
Better ride quality (softer)

Are the positives! :)

But all those positives in my viewed are outweighed by the negatives:
7-speed manual, why why, the 6-speed is stunning!
turbo charges, the sound is not as good, no high rpm explosion and the harmonic sing at 6500rpm and above is lost.
Steering feedback lost since electric transition.
Too refined, lost their raw edge, not necessarily a bad thing.

Even Porsche realise how special NA is hence why the GT3 cars are still large capacity NA engines, just now the regular Carrera/Cayman have moved further away from the GT3 in terms of how they make you feel, yes the new cars are even closer in performance to GT3 cars, but are in reality now further away in enjoyment.

Still will be a great car and Porsche will sell bucket loads of them.

She's also pretty handy round a track (Racing Driver) :)

An interesting point about leaving it in 7th gear from 30mph. The best of both worlds - like an 'auto' when you want to cruise and then manual for those driving purist moments.

I'd be pretty upset it I had an auto and all it did was select the top/highest gear after 30mph. ;)

I did not think of that but I already paid for the GT4 now.

Its back on AT now so hopefully it will sell soon

Its not raining today so hopefully I will take some better photos later.

Autotrader? Yuck!

Stick it on PH and a few specialist forums.

My 911 sold via the M3 forum within a week or so putting it live. :)

Zero advertising cost and car moved quickly to another enthusiest.

Really, I'm very surprised. I will do that as I am a member of a few other forums.

I've sold all my cars via PH, so was a little surprised to sell via M3 forum.

I never advertise on autotrader any more, way to many idiots, scammers and businesses calling you trying to waste your time.

Went from Pzero to PS2 an improvement and a lot more confident inspiring in wet.
Then went to MPSS and wow insanely good tyre in all conditions and lasted over twice as long.

MPSS is the best tyre I've ever had and I've tried most.

I did also offer him the one that was offered to me as well.

There is a lot of stuff I can't really say on a public forum but I believe he has another one on the way but a different color sadly.

However, that car will not live again its destroyed! Its a really shame to be honest as it was a lovely car and some of the options on that are where my fault i.e PCCB's and Carrara White Meticallic paint. :(:(

How did he crash it? Lost it on wet/greasy road?
