Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

All car prices have rocketed to be frank not just Porsches. E46 M3's you could get them for 4-5k now they all seem 8k plus and the nicer ones are 10k plus. 350/370Z are not exactly cheap either.

E92 M3's seem to be shooting up as well, V10 M5's still seem like great value but a lot of cars seem more expensive now compared to a couple of years ago, being offered 12.5k for my M3 by a guy with a GT3 was a little tempted but am keeping it as I want to have some fun in it over the Summer. :)

My 2yr warranty was £1980 with recovery if I remember and service was spot on, if car broke they collected it and re-delivered it or put me in a hire car or one of their own cars. :)

Hi there

Nearly bought myself a Boxster S a couple of days ago for a project.

Maybe I should re-consider its a 2002 Boxster S with 30,000 miles, engine runs fine no issues, but its being parked since 2007 due to the owner passing away.

A friend of a friend who its being passed to wants it gone as its just SORN and taking up space, I nearly snapped there hand of when they said £2000 as I though it was a 2007 car (997) but what they meant is its being stood since 2007 and is a 2002 car (996) but only 30k miles and had zero issues when it was parked.

I just feel as its being outside for around 8 years in the elements and not started or moved in anyway even though its cheap I feel it will cost a few thousand to make it road worthy again so what is a £2000 bargain could cost a few thousand to put right if it needs disc, calipers, pads, bushes, full servicing etc.

Having owned a Porsche one thing it hated was to be stood just for a couple of weeks, let alone 8 years, so skipped on it. :(

Errr...a £2k Boxster S, even if a non-runner and totally knackered, is a total bargain as the parts are surely worth more than that?

Well if the engine is sound its worth quite a bit.

Still not decided yet, but I don't really want 3 cars again, 2 is one too many in a lot of aspects.

Let me ask but one of my mates is interested and anyone buying will need to pay for collection of the car as its obviously not taxed or MOT.

TG review this time for the 718 Boxster and it seems more of the same, which isn't great.

I feel the following quote is a very good summary.

Very spot on, new cars are losing character and fun factor. A car when you start it should make you smile and when you drive it even to the shops should be an event. Unfortunately so many modern sport cars, though so capable are not longer fun to drive unless your going extremely fast or on a race track and even then they can still be a bit meh. I think Boxster Spyder was the most fun last car Porsche did, yeah I know the GT4 is more capable and still incredible but the Spyder was such an event and very interactive and entertaining at low speeds. Though the whole roof/tent thing was a mess. :D

Watching closely the new TVR, Coyote 5.0 V8 engine with some Cosworth tweaking, carbon shell, could be a cracking bit of kit. But early days!

I had MPSS on my 911 and had no warranty issues, if you want to renew the warranty though they will insist on N-spec tyres unless your on good terms with the OPC.

MPSS were incredible on my 911 but most noteworthy is they lasted more than twice as long. :)

If you'd gone in my old GT3 you'd have felt the GT4 was an S-Class.

Your GT3 stopped me buying a Porsche way back then. :D

But no regrets as I got to own a CSL, but 996 GT3's were proper hardcore. Amazing how far dampers/suspension have come along, still amazing track ability but now far more comfortable on the road.

Looks lush. What sort of clean was that? :)

My 996 is having issues with the idling as it keeps stalling when hot with no lights on dash. Annoying as struggles to restart but fires up with a little accelerator.

Disconnect your maf sensor to see if that stops the stalling, if so you need a new maf sensor.

Lol, it's a slightly worse sounding engine, it's a bit much claiming it's dull and soulless!

The old flat 6 is hardly amazing, it sounds like a bag of spanners at low revs and is comparatively lethargic compared to the turbo 4.

How many flat 6 Porsches have you owned?

Never heard so much nonsense posted.

I owned a 997.1 C2S with the 3800cc engine with PSE and the car sounded amazing at any rpm, it got a lot of attention for the noise it made at idle, low revs and full chat because it sounded very good.

It was also never lethargic, throttle response in sports mode was superb and it would get up and go from any rpm and pulled hard to the 7500rpm limit.

Apart from the reliability issues of the the gen1 they go and sound awesome, of course I am speaking from an ownership experience of nearly five years and having driven all the other flat 6 engines Porsche had to go offer also and none of them matched your description.

I disagree gibbo the 911 engines don't sound great at idle and just above. However lethargic is definitely not true.

Mine sounded pretty awesome in fairness even at idle, on the basis of PSE and valves open.

For me a car is heavily about how good the engine sounds and how it makes power and throttle response, but noise is a big importance. End of the day if noise was not important everyone would buy Ecoboost Mustangs, but they don't because those one sound completely crap like pretty much all 4 cylinder turbocharged cars do. For me the engine makes a car and it can make some cars truly great.

Of course new Porsche 718's will handle and drive great, they all do but going turbocharged makes them less appealing to me and then the fact they lost two cylinders as well even more so.

Audi now have a real chance with the new TT RS to steal market share from Porsche because I'd take the new TT RS over the new Cayman S I reckon, 5 cylinder turbo sounds better and makes a lot more power and the new TT chassis will hopefully finally resolve the massive understeer issues the last RS had. Though in reality I'd buy neither as the RS just is well a bit Audi and girly.

I'd take mine over a GT4 at less money every day. It's massively more car for the money. I was looking at 110k to 115k for the right spec when I bought my R8 for 86k. I think those cars will be 80's in 12 months, mine is unlikely to be 56k. The GT4 is not selling for big overs. It will soon be at list I feel

When you stopping by OcUK, you need to take me out! :D

Looks awesome Dave.

Also what I thought was a GTS the other day in bright yellow coming towards me was a GT4, a guy who lives just up the road from me has got one identical to yours. I have to say its present on the road is amazing, it really stands out in a good way and looks a very exotic car, more like a small Ferrari than Porsche which I bet many people will mistake it for who are not into their cars.

How is the other car purchase idea going? :D

As I have said on many occasions you REALLY need to drive a Porsche to form an opinion on why so many people like them and why they are so popular. I have never understood the 'you see them everywhere so I would not want one' brigade as that is simply cutting off your nose to spite your face. If you're a true petrol head what people think about your car, how popular it is, what image it carries should not matter when compared to how it makes you feel and the smile it puts on your face when you drive it. Boxster has been one of the finest, if not the finest, 2 seats sports car that normal people can own for over a decade in my book.

This is what I loved about my 911, people would rave to me how great a sorted MX5 or Lotus Elise/Exige handles, to which my response was but I have that great handling ability already, difference is I have it in a lovely GT coupe with heated seated, solid german build quality and it also goes seriously quick in a straight line and has traction in the wet that a Lotus or MX5 could only dream off.

A lot of people think your talking BS, until they drive one properly and then they are sold. The 997 onwards in 911's are epic, and the new 981 Boxster/Cayman are a huge leap on from the previous generations, they are now a match for their bigger 911 brothers.

I am still not ready to return to Porsche, but they really are fantastic kit and so capable out the box on road and track.

So I sold my GT4 around 2 weeks ago and this weekend I sold my 911. I have been hunting for replacement for a few days and I considered all sorts of things:

911 GTS - this is what I really want but I did not feel its wroth 30k more than my old car
R8 V10 Plus, still love the idea and found a nice one for 80k but I am a bit afraid of the depreciation and to be honest I would like the new one more which I assume will be down to around 90k in a year
M6 GC - seems to be amazing value and I was close to pulling the trigger, I did find one I liked but it sold and I could not find another one that I fancied.
TTRS - I don't know why but I still have a itch for one of these, obviously not in the same league as the other cars but I may just get one for a couple of months if I find one at a good price.
M2 - thought about it as I could get one at list but decided not to bother with the effort as I am not that interested.

So I bought a Cayenne 4.2 V8 D lol
I found a lovely spec car, agreed a deal at what I feel is a really good price for a car that was 80k 3 years ago.

Now the plan is to get a weekend toy to keep down in London, I'm in no rush and will keep an eye over the winter but I'm considering things a bit more exotic or may even get a GT4 with comfort seats which can be found for 10k less than I sold my one for.

Could not go backwards any more, do not keep it for long, not that you will haha.

Haha well I thought I would try something different. I was very tempted by a Turbo S which was around the same price but I thought If I get a practical car I may as well do it right and get one that will not cost a arm and a leg to run.

Actually I was thinking it does not look so good in the photos, we will see what they deliver it to me next week. I got it at a good price so I can move it on if I am not happy with it.

Probably though the winter, lets see.

It does look nice, I am going to the event in Cambridge tomorrow night. I still have a deposit paid but I don't know if I will buy it or not now.

It does mean though after this epic fail on your part, come Spring/Summer next year we are all expecting to see a GT3 RS, Turbo S or new R8 V10 on your drive to make up for this. :p

Why don't they just... replace the discs and pads and change the drive converter box

He is making it up I reckon, he came to his senses and realised what a massive mistake this purchase was. :D

That is a hell of a lot of money for a C4S albeit with decent options.

I would definitely be looking else where at competitors at that price point as suggested.

Agreed it is lovely but 125k on what is otherwise just a regular run of the mill 911. I'd rather just buy used and save a tonne of cash or buy something special that will hold value better like a GT Porsche.

I can see me replacing the wife's MX5 with a nice 981 Boxster S in the new year. I keep looking at them and they just look sublime, I know they drive sublime and now I am going to wait for them to hit mid to low 30's and I shall pounce. Question is manual or PDK....

They really are awesome cars the 981 Boxster. I've driven Boxster, Boxster S manual and Boxster S PDK.

Boxster though lacking power was still as much fun to drive as the more powerful version if not more so, just ended up ringing its neck more. :D

Boxster S is certainly a noticeable improvement in a straight line and mid-range. The manual is perfect, they perfected the 6-speed from the 997 with the higher up position, it just works so well.

However the major advantage of the PDK was standing starts, everytime hitting 60 in sub 5s was an absolute breeze, just nail the throttle dry or wet and it just did it without fuss. Other car owners still think Boxsters are slow things, so I had quite a bit of fun embarrassing a lot of things from a traffic light and of course on a country road the balance is impeccable.

With such a great manual, but the obvious advantages of a superb PDK transmission (get Sport Plus) it is a very difficult choice.

The 981 S is a great car and that flat 6 sounds glorious with the roof down, I'd not be surprised to see them hold value quite well now too as the new Boxster/Cayman for me is absolute JUNK, I repeat they are JUNK. I don't care that they are quicker, handle better, do better economy, one of the major attractions to Porsche was always the glorious sound track from the flat 6 NA and the instant and balance able throttle response. These are now lost! :(

Surely for 25k you can get a 997? Having driven both 996 and 997, well I'd never buy a 996 to be honest, BMW's from same era were simply better in everyway, talking E46 M3 and E39 M5.

The 996 I just did not get along with, driven C4, C2S and GT3, none of them made me giggle or excited they were well not for me and I'd not buy one. Then move onto a 997 and I most definetely would buy one, well I even did. Just a vastly better car, I'd take a 997.1 C2 or C4 personally.

So unless you have a specific reason for a 996 C4S like collecting or dream car, buy the 997 as its simply better car in a lot of ways, well every way actually.
