Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

Not particular quick in a straight line, but damn can it maintain some seriously high speeds when cornering and those gear changes are rapid.

12.3 seconds quicker than previous model, not bad :D

Yes very impressive, am guessing the improvement comes from mostly the downforce improvements also note how planted it is, no sideways moments at all.

It does seem a great car, it can be planted or it can be an absolute hooligan, I want one so bad. :D

After watching episode 2 of the new top gear without that ginger idiot, I am utterly obsessed with the 911 Turbo S, it is a gorgeous car and can't get enough of it, unfortunately the closest I will ever get to driving one is in Assetto Corsa with my HTC Vive unless I win the lottery jackpot, then I will be down the local Porsche dealer before the cheque has even cleared!

I've driven a lot of nice stuff and both in wet and dry conditions. A car that left me the most impressed particular wet ability was a 997.2 Turbo S at Oulton Park. Its ability even in the hands of a none race driver was beyond amazing, you could drive the car absolutely flat out in really bad wet conditions on a tight circuit like Oulton Park and you could deploy all 500+ horsepower with ease. In the wet the car made stuff like GT3's look like they were not moving.

The only downside was it was so easy, but ability wise I have never driven a car as capable as a 911 Turbo in the wet, it even made a GTR look slow, but at the same time the GTR was more engaging. Porsche made the Turbo the ultimate go fast car in anybodies hands, it really is a super insanely fast car, but anyone can drive one at super insane speeds with half a brain cell. It gets boring quick as its just way too easy and unfortunately the new Carrera's have also gone this way you simply can't unstick them. The Caymans still remain good fun however even though they are also turbo charged the chassis is still playful.

I'm considering getting a 996 C2 or C4 as a first Porsche. As far as I can tell most of the stigma seems to be that it's not a pure 911 which doesn't really bother me.

Its a pure 911, ignore it, the 996 got a hardtime because it was the first 911 to go water-cooled so all the purist had a crisis. It is better than the 993 nearly in every way, except looks (from front) and for some noise. They are great cars with only weakness being the engine, but a C2 or C4 is a good place, get it boroscoped or buy one that has had preventative IMS and bore scoring engine modifications done, or just buy and don't worry about it until it breaks.

But compare that to mine and look how easy this one is to pedal. It's like sitting on your sofa playing an Xpox game and I think this sums up modern cars. They are epic, but the challenge has moved so massively up the scale that you will never get close to the limit on the road unless you are driving like you and me, I mean like a nutter, sorry I mean not like you and me.

No it is very true indeed about nearly all modern cars now but also as we get older its not such a bad thing either haha. The Mustang is still very enjoyable as its fun at legal speeds can also be pedalled silly quick too if good enough behind the wheel. But next car will be something that makes going faster easier, so flappy pedal check for sure, no more clutch and three pedals for me after this car.

So guys i test drove a 991.1S yesterday in Sheffield, after having driven my 996 turbo there. It was ok but theres nowhere near the road feel im used to (powersteering plus probably not helping). Am i doing it wrong, also PDK is very, very quick-not sure anyone could use sport plus on the roads it is a bit jarring. I was a little disappointed in it. The 2nd gear is too long, i actually enjoyed the basic boxster (with PSE of course) i had as a courtesy car last year. IMO they've become just a bit too refined. Am i right in thinking a 997.2 will be a bit closer to my 996 in terms of 'rawness'?

They have become super easy to drive insanely fast without feeling challenged, they are so so capable now without even going near the limits and the extra refinement has certainly dulled them. Due to this it does kind of make the 981 Boxster and Cayman attractive purchases as they are great fun, just a little under powered. Or try to grab a GT4 as its probably Porsche's best car.

Otherwise yes a 997.2 C2S would be a good shout and as to previous post, sports chrono is a must, even more on a PDK car.

Having driven a 991.2 C2S with PDDC and power pack the cars ability was simply mind boggling, I have never experienced so much grip in a car ever!

GT4>M2 any day of the week!

The GT4 is the only other car I've eyed up in the Porsche lineup, I feel the regular 911's and Cayman are not enough for me, though brilliant I want something with a bit of extra flare, so GT3 all day long with PDK. Turbo too boring and though I love everything about the GT4 and don't slap me but I'd want a PDK version as it would become my daily car. Plus the values in the UK seem to be flattening, so now could be a bad time to drop 90k on a GT4.

Hence just ordered the MY18 Mustang, was looking at R8 V10's but kind of got put off from Housey's experience of reliability and the terrible dealer network. I'll just stick with yank tank for now and keep the M3 for corners. :D

You need to be a real Porsche nut to understand all the combinations available. Not simple is it?

Portiacraft have a Gen 2 997 Carrera 2 manual for £33k which looks reasonable. Shame about the horrible writing down the side though :(

Easily removed, its just a vinyl, so buy it on the basis they have it professionally removed.

Though that millionth 911 is not a spec I would choose I can see why Porsche did, oh my does it stand out like a sore thumb, exactly the goal you want when marketing/PR is the primary goal. Porsche really know their market and HOW to market. :)

I loved my time at their test circuit in Germany and just being handed the keys to all the latest gen cars to thrash the living daylights out of, can't beat perks of the job. :D

And they would still not sell you one. :(

It is really annoying, because I see brand new GT3 at £111,000 and a 2-3yr old one is like £118,000-£140,000 so the only options seems to be buy second hand and pay over the odds for an older model which I think some here said Porsche have had some issues with and won't warrant the engine if used on track, not 100% sure if true, seems crazy if the case.

Could sell the Mustang, M3 and with savings that is 70-80k to put down against it, would happily finance 30k to get into a GT3, though I would want the one with the big silly wing, not this touring one. :D

Hating moment, boy do they sound like junk.
Now having driven Boxster, Cayman, Boxster S and Cayman S on track in Germany of this latest generation, their ability is uncanny. The none S models avoid though they had pretty bad lag which annoyed me vastly, even on track and you could very much tell they were turbocharged. The S models though were vastly superior, near instant throttle response and plenty of power but the engine has lost its charm, there was no fun factor in wringing out the engine to 7000rpm, infact I found myself changing up earlier.

Handling wise, simply fantastic, as always with a Cayman/Boxster in the right hands will simply embarrass most cars on road and track, they are very playful too, though you do need the S model I found to play to get it sliding around on power, the none S simply lacked power to do so on a dry track.

Great cars, but just look at that GT4 and listen to it, worth the extra money every time in my view.

Also the test is unfair on performance stats, notice how they keep it pretty hush that its a PDK car against a manual, very unfair especially when you can get a 718 Cayman S in manual, I feel they'd be more equal then 0-60 and quarter mile.

Gents,

Currently looking at 981 Cayman s and boxster s' s. Every single Porsche approved model I've seen has pzeros on. Is this common across the range? I've found them to be woeful tyres in the pay and I'm trying to work out if I should budget for replacements off the bat.

Quite common yes, fortunately they are such balanced cars the Pzero is not a huge issues, enjoy it and when they need replacing just throw on Michelins.
