Possible to keep second display (TV) enabled even when it's turned off?

I'm in the process of setting up the TV as a dual display of my PC to run XBMC. Now the only problem I come across with this is that when the TV is switched off or is on another input it appears as non existent to the PC. Switch it to the right input to pick up the TV and it appears again. This is quite annoying as it means I have to switch the TV to the PC input before I can fire up XBMC on the secondary display.

Is there anyway I can set it up so that the secondary display always appears as connected?

There are devices available that sit inline on a VGA or DVI cable and simulate a monitor being present. This should do the trick. I have come across them before, but cant' seem to find them now I'm afraid. They just look like DVI>VGA converters though.

That's a shame, was hoping i'd be able to get away with something in software.
