To the point of it being utterly unusable! Anyone have any idea why?
It only seems to have happened recently.

Thanks,

Flare

Yep, it's Facebook Chat for me too, happens whenever anyone starts typing or sends a message. Everything else freezes up for a second or two.

ive noticed this as well, kinda annoying. Starting to use my chrome install more and more now.

Doesn't FB chat require some type of Quick Time?
On my works machine, it always says a plug-in is missing the first time I try to chat to anyone. At home or in IE (with QT installed) it does not appear

it's exactly the same with me, i'll tryinstalling quicktime and see what that does.

i wonder why it has recently become so unstable?

Faceballs chat uses JavaScript. You don't need QuickTime nor any other plugin. It's pretty much always been awfully implemented and quite frequently breaks.
That said, it works fine here.

It works without QuickTime but very unstable. The first message you receive refreshes the page and the FF pop-up thingy instructs you that you are missing a plugin. It is QuickTime that is missing.

If you stay on the one page then you can continue to chat to someone, but if you navigate away from that page or open an app for example, as soon as someone sends you a new message (first message of the chat) your app will refresh and again a missing plugin message will appear

It definitely isn't using QuickTime here

Edit: Just disabled QuickTime and used it, no missing plugin warning...could it be trying to use it to play the popping noise when you get a message?
