Post apocalyptic scenario (not a "what would you do" thread)

I would love to see the world for an hour or so without any power stations on what so ever, no lights, no light polution.

On a clear night of course :)

I have that every clear evening - no street lights here, no external lights at all, for about 40 miles!

You might enjoy a holiday in North Korea

Wood stove, solar and wind power and you'd be fine, especially if you have a well too.
There are hundreds of vids on youtube, showing you how to make a solar powered heater from alu cans, how to make a wind turbine using motors out of a printer etc etc

Very interesting. I thought we might have electricity for something like 1-2 years at least:eek: I imagined gas wouldn't last too long.

So what's the deal with petrol? If we don't salvage it within a couple of weeks from the various petrol stations, will it just go "stale" ?

Doesnt really matter where its stored it will gradually go off. It could probably last 2-3 years though.

I wonder if you could refine crude in a rudimentry home made chemistry kit?.

You probably have 3-4 days before electricity is fubar and then the water pumps go off for the same reason. Just as a side note its not commonly known but petrol and such do eventually go stale and useless except as using it as an accelerant on wood fires.

Its amazing how few people know that, within 2 years all the petrol and diesel already refined would have broken down and be useless.

Just imagine the sound of looting, gunfire and screaming. Fires breaking out everywhere and the general collapse of society. And that's just within the first five minutes.

It'd be beautiful. :D

The whole thing about looting in said scenario just strikes me as extremely stupid. I have always figured that should something extreme happen then certain utilities like electricity would not last very long, in which case why go around looting eletrical items? Surely the idea would be to stock up on tinned foods and water??? I suppose that's what people would be looting for *shrug*

I just had another thought, there would be no more soya milk so I'd be a bit shafted since my IBS prevents me from drinking normal milk :(

What would nuclear plants do / happen if people just vanished?
Most western reactors will turn off safely if left due to the way they are designed.
The ones with a positive void coefficient like the RBMK that popped in Cernobyl will probably do the same as long as the control rods are in place to control the reaction.

Concerning Gas, water, elctricity etc wouldn't the delivery systems just get wasted and damaged in an initial Nuclear attack ?

Supply would be very limited in certain areas due to downed power lines cracked pipes etc..

Anyone have Ray Mears phone number ? I want to start developing a good friendship as of now ;)

I was thinking of astro-photography; a friend visited with a basic DSLR, and took some breathtaking shots of the sky. I bet with some good lenses, and a bit of knowledge, you could take incredible photos

You don't have to spend a fortune and you can attach a camera body to a telescope. With your location it’s worth taking a look at how to get started.

The powerstations would all shut down very quickly due to the post-apocalyse usage levels not being the same as pre-apocalyse.

If it was zombies or a plague or something, people aren't going to shut down their appliances before they die. Everything will still be running, which means fires are very likely in urban areas. The urban areas will burn, some sub-station somwhere will get engulfed, and the automatic shut-off will get triggered. If nukes went off, all the uneffected powerstations would shut down due to the cities they supply being destroyed.

Once part of the power-grid shuts down, the draw on the rest of it will increase and powerstations will shutdown everywhere to prevent overloading. Once part of the powergrid is gone, it'd cause a cascade effect shutting everything down. This would happen to all types of even in areas supplied with "sustainable" powerstations such as wind, hydro or geothermal. I guess you'd be lucky to have more than a few days of power with the stations unattended.

Read the last Light and one second after

Both amazing books dealing with how we would deal with resources if the end came..

Take london, millions of people where would they get fresh water and supplies.. within a few days there would be hordes of people heading into the countryside stripping the villages and towns dry..

Thanks to the wonderfully short sighted gun control measures in this country that have disarmed the law abiding population yet have not disarmed the criminals many of us can look forward to having any remaining sources of food being firmly under the control of people who won't have your best interests at heart, to put it mildly.
