Post apocalyptic scenario (not a "what would you do" thread)

I have searched but not read the whole thread.

There's a great deal of contingency planning going into effect because of the coronal mass ejections expected during a period of intense sun activity in 2013.

Potentially it could wipe out the electricity grid, which has knock on effects on everything. More likely it'll have limited irritating effects as companies put some kind of contingency planning in place. But I'm really guessing to be honest. Expect scaremongering about it next year!

The biggest immediate problem would be other people. The supermarkets would very quickly be looted out of stock, and deliveries would obviously not be coming. 60 million people in the UK don't seem too intimidating as they are, but when you turn that into 5 million with a good stash of edible food, and 55 million hungry people, then I would imagine it gets very ugly, very quickly.

Water wise what about water towers? I know water is pumped up to them but does the water just run off gravity to houses?

Probably a bit academic really as the water would probably be gone in a day, if that (stockpiling water etc) but may be worth knowing if you were the only one left?:p

There was a marvelous black and white Twilight Zone episode that really illustrated how close we are to chaos.

Aside from that.. is it possible to seal flour and have it keep for a very long time?

I watched The Road last night, it covered that exact issue, can't say I liked the look of that post apocalyptic world, even without any zombies!

What do you mean by very long time? I assume sealed in a container and left in a cool, dry place it could probably last a decade or so. Tinned it could probably last a century (along with most other tinned stuff).

I was reading about "Nelsons" Navy yesterday and the stuff prepared for the navy (bread etc) regularly lasted 5 years or so in cool and dry conditions and that was on ships etc.

That is what I mean Amp. If it's possible to seal flour away safely for an indefinate period then it seems like a small step, along with plenty of water somewhere in the house.

I don't think it'd be sufficient and in some apocalypse I'd get brought down by the rest of humanity. Nor do I believe it's rational to go to the extreme lengths survivalists go to... but I think a few steps are worthwhile.

There jsut simply isn't anywhere remote enough to get away from all the hordes of hungry people. Even if you did get into deep dark wales, supplies, and then the onset of winter...

Then again I think the die off would be rather quick in this country...

You don't have to spend a fortune and you can attach a camera body to a telescope. With your location it’s worth taking a look at how to get started.

I wonder how much it might cost for a very budget setup. On a clear summer night, you can easily make out the Milky Way. I imagine photos, well taken, would look superb

There's enough cans in stores and houses, plus lighters and matches and wood - to keep fed for ages.

Water would need collecting after a while.

Would need to grow a clan, various benefits of this.

Would need to train up and kill all the zombies/whatever.

Then rebuild.

Not that complicated really.

Good times! As long as I can manually pump out petrol, the roads will be free of idiots and I can burn up and down the country on my bike... Happy with that :D

ags

Depends what kind of event causes all this... Zombies, bombs etc people will be fleeing the cities roads will be blocked with cars and corpses... I doubt you would find many empty roads, at least in England.

Jcb33.

It would be time to get that V8 interceptor out, Mad Max :-)

I am the Nightrider! I am the chosen one. The mighty hand of vengeance, sent down to strike the unroadworthy! I'm hotter than a rollin' dice. Step right up, germ, and watch the kid lay down the rubber road, ride to freedom!
