PowerColor 3850 Pro Extreme 512MB to noisy

There are some Fan tools on these forums, i think some are under the overclocking section, the topic is stickied and there are a load of applications on there that should be able to tweak the fan speed.

I was told the fan on these is not adjustable, always runs on full blast as opposed to the Ati reference hsf. If you manage to get the fan speed to change using a 3rd-party tool please say so, I'd like to know too.

You could always, I suppose, either take off that heatsink and put an aftermarket one, or you could unplug that fan and use a Zalman bracket to suspect a bigger, slower, quieter fan over the graphics card.

I've got the Powercolor 3870 with the Zalman Professional Cooling System on it too. Just bought a Zalman 6-channel fan controller and attached the GPU fan to that. Runs dead quiet now, and on minimum, it doesn't go above 35degs C. I just amp it up when in games.

the cooler on these works really well..... can hit 918Mhz/2520Mhz with it on reasonable temps of about 55C load in ATItool(need..... more..... voltage......)

Not quiet though. Some people seem to have zip-tied 120mm fans to the HSF after disconecting the stock fan, which seems to work, but is a very bulky solution. I'm almost tempted to put an S1 on it and a 120mm fan or 2, but with the temps as it its almost a case of "aint broke, why fix it".

I have to agree, the cooler is bloody excellent. I can run my 3870 at 885core, and I haven't tried any higher and it doesn't play up at all. It doesn't go over 55degs C tbh. Shame to waste it, that's why I bought the fan controller. That, and I had severla other 120mm fans to slow down.
