most prepaid plans expire after a month if you dont use them, is there anything that will stay active for at least a year or longer?

Credit on Orange pay as you go will last indefinitely. The phone will remain active as long as you use it at least once every six months.

So if the phone/sim isn't used for six months, one would need to phone Orange to re-connect (or whatever) and be able to use any remaining credited minutes?

if the line is disconnected due to inactivity, the restoration of balance is not guaranteed, however it can be done with good grounds. All you need to do to keep the line active is make or recieve a call or send or recieve a text once during the six months though.

... which can be easily done even abroad, as long as where you are uses GSM. Just pop in your UK SIM card into the phone, send a text to any number, and that's your "activity within 6 months" fulfilled. (yes, you do get charged for it but it's not much, certainly worthwhile for keeping your SIM active)
