Prepay card electricity meters

ok just found out my bills should go down now i have entered the new code into my meter.

rate is 14.925p per unit or whatever they assess it in, gigavolts i don't know. bloody electricity :p

your landlord is reselling electricity, its dodgy very dodgy, unless its a key/card meter you can top up at a newsagent then run away

It sounds like you are describing a token meter. These are frankly ancient and should have been removed and replaced ages ago with a standard 'key' prepayment meter.

As popular as the myth is, no, pre-paid electricity and gas is generally no more expensive than those who have credit (quarterly billed) meters. Most suppliers have equalised their tariffs.

If your landlord is somehow charging you separately for energy then just confirm you are paying the same rate as s/he is being charged on their bill. It is not illegal to pass this cost through at face value but frankly it'd be easier if you just took care of everything yourself.

I'm interested to know how your landlord has so many of these cards to sell too as I said this is very old tech and if you've not done so already you should be asking for a replacement meter asap.

Sorry to bump this after so long.

I wasnt actually the tenant in the situation but the landlord. They were inherited and id never heard of them before. I bought several hundred of the tokens/cards for a fiver or something but could sell them to my tenants for the face value of a tenner each.

Changed them out immediately after finding this out for proper meters.

cheers guys

So do you just pull out the key(orange and blue part) and take it too the nearest paypoint. Will this turn off the electricity while you do this, and do you have to register with BG(or whatever company your with)? Doing it for the first time on friday.

Also i notice there is a blue button on the reader what's this for, nothing written beside it.

Whilst you're in 'credit' on the meter, the blue button cycles through all the display option for the unit.

I think you also need to press it to accept the use of emergency credit however I can't be sure, I don't let mine get to zero.

You can also buy a USB device from the supplier to which the meter key fits and you can top-up online via your own PC.

I find those top up electricity things so annoyingly pointless.

I had one two houses ago and i find it pointless because electricity is never something that you don't want. So you end up having to go to the shop at annoying times to get electric top up. Worst is when you come home from work all tired and ****ed off and no electric and you then haev to walk to the shop and top up before you can do anything. So pointless, its not any cheaper either.

I think the only benefit is for landlords so that if their flat is empty they are not paying electric and also don't need to worry about who's name it is on the bill and so on.

The unit will be kWh (Kilowatt hour)
Which basically means you can run something that is rated at 1000W (1kW) or 4.16A for an hour and it will cost you roughly 14.925p :D

I get through about £30 a month on my pre-pay, with a PC running most of the time. I don't have any central heating though and mostly just put up with the cold.

My missus had storage heaters in her flat was was paying £80 a month on the meter, it was insane. Now she's had proper gas heating put in which should be much cheaper.
