if you do buy her a bag make sure:

a) she's present when you buy it for her

and b) don't buy her a mulberry bag

i bought one for my girlfriend for christmas and now i rank third in the relationship...
 
How much do you want to spend? You're taking out for a meal in London by the looks of the other thread, so why not book a nice night in a hotel to go with it and perhaps a show? Failing that if you know she likes Jewellery and shoes and stuff, take her into Selfridges, Harvey Nicholls or Harrods and treat her to something of her choosing (you'll have to be very brave to get it right on your own). Although less personal, you can sell it as the whole "weekend being posh in central London thing" you've got half planned already.
 
how old is your gf? what does she do for a living? what does she do for fun?

the 'niceness' of a bag / shoes / perfume is very subjective - good luck with that!
(pro tip - look at what she already has and buy something similar, but better!)
 
Get something she wants!

Plus flowers and meal out.

Don't make mistake of splashing out lots of cash on something she won't use as that will land you in the bad books for not paying attention to her. Same with jewellery - though its probably your best option but check out what she wears and stick to same style.

Since its first birthday should be fine and you won't get hit too hard for not realising what she actually wanted. :D
