President Obama Endorses Gay Marriage

Why is Scotland always the one to bring forth sweeping changes?

Ban on smoking (public areas), being one example.

i thought Ireland did the smoking first?

But it's to win votes in any upcoming referendum "look how free and progressive we are and how evil the English are".

But then it might just be like the welsh assembly and their bag charge "We're the special children not allowed real power so lets do something ****ing retarded".

Ireland?

Don't really know about that.

I don't see allowing a higher liberty being retarded :(.

I'd prefer a solution which acknowledges that there are three distinctly different things that are currently slopped together under the term 'marriage' and which seperates them:

1) Personal - vows between the spouses. I suggest 'wedding' as the word for that, since it's what the word means (O.E. weddian, meaning 'to vow').

2) Government recognition of the relationship as a legal agreement. This is where all the legal rights and responsibilities would be. I suggest 'civil partnership' as the term for that, since it's a legal partnership like a business partnership but civil instead of business.

3) Religious recognition of the relationship as a religious agreement. Granted or refused on whatever basis any given religion deems relevant, with complete disregard for fairness or rationality (since it's religious). They can call it whatever they like - 'blessing', maybe.

That would stop people on both sides fighting, since they'd no longer have anything to fight about. Of course, that means it won't happen because there are too many people on both sides whose top priority is fighting in order to assert dominance over the other side. It will also explicitly seperate religion from the other parts of marriage, which isn't wanted by those fighting on either side.
