Do my previous (mp3) ringtones have to be converted to an iphone format to enable me to use them on my Iphone? Only just received this phone and so I need a little time to understand all of its features. Thank you :)

If they are under 40 seconds long then you can just import to iTunes as AAC and then rename the extension from .m4a to .m4r and then re-import them. Make sure you don't have anything like "Album" filled in under the entry in iTunes otherwise they may not synch to your phone.

they need to be converted to .m4r files check the iPhone sticky or this guide:

Thanks for the advice but will this work with the latest itunes as I read somewhere that Apple had patched the ability to change/convert to .m4r?

Oh I should have previously stated that my "old" ringtones are under 40 secs and are just musical/jokey tones not musical songs. Obviously they were previously paid for as well so there should not be any digital rights management.

Edit: The blog is for Osx not Vista :(

No they work fine still, just set your import settings in iTunes to 'AAC' and then import your mp3 ringtones. Locate them on the drive and change the extension, easy as that and you can do it under both OSX & Windows.
